Because of his reputation and fan base within the sport, Diaz would be a marquee signing for any leading MMA promotion. Speaking to Ariel Helwani on the MMA hour, ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong discussed the possibility of signing free agent Nate Diaz.
Is ONE Championship interested in Nate Diaz?
During their conversation, Sityodtong told Helwani about his company’s strategy for signing new stars. He said that they “would love to sign any of the hottest free agents that come up… in their primes.” Upon hearing this remark, Helwani asked about the possibility of ONE Championship signing Nate Diaz.
Helwani asked if the promotion would make a go for Diaz if he became available. He wanted Sityodtong to clarify if the company had a certain profile of fighters in mind and if Diaz matched that profile.
“What makes Nate interesting, obviously, is that he wants to do multiple sports. And that is definitely the platform of ONE… When I look at Nate, there is a possibility of that as well. Like in boxing and grappling, and I know he wants to do that. So yeah, I mean we’d be interested, but it’s not our typical path.”
ONE Championship would open up several avenues for Diaz. Because of their format, he could compete in multiple sports, like MMA and grappling, at the same time.
