Amy Pirnie's debut win—Is she the next big thing in ONE Championship?

Scottish Muay Thai sensation Amy Pirnie couldn’t have asked for a better promotional debut at ONE Fight Night 24: Brooks vs. Balart on Prime Video.

Last Friday, August 2, in the opening contest of the event, the 31-year-old scored a highlight-reel, one-punch knockout against Hong Kong phenom Yu Yau Pui, announcing herself as a real contender in the atomweight Muay Thai division. That bout went down live in U.S. primetime at the iconic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

For Pirnie, the statement-making victory not only established her as a player on the global stage but also put an end to Yu’s incredible six-fight winning streak. After the fight, the Scot spoke to the media about her performance and what it meant to her: “It’s been an incredible journey to get to ONE and put on a performance like that. I feel pretty proud of myself for it.

“It means a lot to me because Yu is such a great fighter here at ONE. She’s not low in the division. She’s rattled through everyone who’s been put in front of her so far. So to get the win with a substantial KO, it’s massive.”

A decorated fighter who had largely dominated the U.K. Muay Thai scene, it’s no surprise that the experienced Pirnie came into the bout with a well-considered game plan. After studying Yu, she realized that her ultra-aggressive, pressure-oriented style left her open to counter-strikes.

What’s next for the Scottish fighter?

With that in mind, Pirnie executed her plan to perfect landing a show-stopping punch in the opening seconds.

She explained, “We actually have been working on that. We know she steps in and drops her hands, so we were planning on that. Her pressure was great from the start, so I can see why it was overwhelming for a lot of her opponents. So I tried to play it tentatively on the shot and managed to get it quite quickly.”
