Jarred Brooks wants to prove he is the best competitor in ONE Championship, and he’s not limiting himself to just one sport. At ONE Fight Night 13: Allazov vs. Grigorian on Friday, August 4, “The Monkey God” will challenge Mikey Musumeci for the ONE Flyweight World Championship inside the iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

It’s an unprecedented move for Brooks, who has dominated ONE’s strawweight mixed martial arts ranks since his debut in 2021. He is currently riding an unbeaten record in the division, amassing a 4-0 slate that includes a unanimous decision win over longtime titleholder Joshua Pacio to claim the World Title last December.

Jarred Brooks wanted a victory despite his respect towards Mikey Musumeci

Brooks has been adamant that he wants to stay active while he awaits the first challenger to his MMA crown, so he decided to move up a weight class and over to submission grappling to hunt for another strap. The American star understands that Musumeci operates on a completely different level from what he is used to, and he admits that he had been hoping for a longer preparation time.

Nonetheless, the former state wrestling champion remains confident in his skills and promises to put on a show for the fans. “I felt like I would’ve had six months to get ready for Mikey,” Brooks said in an interview with ONE Championship.  “It was a little bit sooner for me, but the whole world can see even on three weeks’ notice that I can go in and possibly beat the best submission artist ever.”

Musumeci has been perfect in ONE Championship so far, defeating all four of his opponents in dominant fashion. Through his success, “Darth Rigatoni” has been open about his struggles with depression, urging others to seek help and fight through it as he does.

Brooks respects what his compatriot stands for, but he is focused on building his legacy in ONE and wants to continue doing it by scoring a dominant win on August 4. “He’s a great kid. He’s somebody that I look up to and that everybody else should look up to in the industry. But I know he has his tics. So we’ll see when he grapples with me how he feels about that,” he said.

Jarred Brooks was excited about the opportunities that this win might provide him

“Man, if I can beat Mikey Musumeci at his own game and beat him for the flyweight title, I think that I can start to call my own shots as far as doing these mixed-rules contests and stuff like that.”
