Mikey Musumeci is a true student of martial arts, and he’s looking to test his skill set once again in his upcoming outing in ONE Championship.

This Friday, October 6, the flyweight submission grappling titleholder will take part in an openweight submission grappling contest with former lightweight MMA king Shinya Aoki inside the iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, at ONE Fight Night 15: Le vs. Freymanov.

Mikey Musumeci Looking To Prove Submission Prowess By Taking Out Shinya Aoki

Musumeci has proven that he is among the best grapplers alive today, and he has dominated every single opponent that has stood across from him in the world’s largest martial arts organization. Choosing to compete in an open-weight match against a martial arts legend who has regularly fought three weight classes heavier than you isn’t something that an average athlete would go for, given that it means competing with a significant size and strength disadvantage.

But ‘Darth Rigatoni’ is built differently, and he took the match with Aoki in order to showcase his development. “My technical ability in finishing submissions, that’s what I’ve been working so hard for in no-gi once I made the transition,” Mususmeci told ONE in an interview.

“2021 was like my first year competing in no-gi. So it’s been about two years now that I’ve been working really hard in no-gi, and yeah, it’s a lot different than the gi because you have to have perfect finishing mechanics to finish people.”

Musumeci is confident in doing the unthinkable at ONE Fight Night 15

The multiple-time BJJ World Champion has always tried to find ways to perfect his already formidable skills in the grappling arts. His obsessive nature has helped him develop multiple ways to submit opponents, including his signature ‘Mikey Lock.’ He believes this latest challenge will help him further make a statement with his techniques, and he aims to do what no person has done in “Tobikan Judan’s” nearly two-decade-long career.

“Aoki has never once been submitted in his 58-fight professional MMA career,” Musumeci said. “It would say a lot about all my finishing mechanics and that they’re on point, you know, that I’m technically on point with my finishing mechanics. Because again, I do not have a strength advantage against Shinya.”
