Can Jonathan Haggerty's relentless drive make him the greatest in ONE Championship history?

Jonathan Haggerty is a two-sport World Champion, but he’s far from done collecting and keeping his gold. The fighters appears to be wanting more from the promotion and guess what he will get what he wants.

At ONE 168: Denver this Friday, September 6 on U.S. primetime, “The General” needs to ward off a tough challenge against flyweight kickboxing king Superlek Kiatmoo9 inside Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado.

Jonathan Haggerty became the flyweight Muay Thai king back in May 2019 when he defeated the legendary Sam-A Gaiyanghadao at ONE: FOR HONOR. Unfortunately, back-to-back losses against Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon pushed him out of the World Title throne. Despite this, he was unbeatable by everyone else, dominating his next two opponents in the division.

In 2022, he decided to move up to bantamweight after realizing he could unleash more of his greatness in a heavier weight class. By his third fight outside the 135 lb. limit, he had both the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai and Kickboxing World Titles draped on each shoulder. However, there may be some particularly intriguing matchups back at flyweight – perhaps a revenge fight against Rodtang, maybe a superfight against Japanese superstar Takeru Segawa, or even a challenge for Superlek’s kickboxing belt.

Speaking to ONE Championship in an interview, the 27-year-old said he is not closing his door to doing what Superlek is attempting to do this weekend. “I always think about [returning to flyweight]. I mean, my dad always tells me I can do it, and who knows, once I beat Superlek, maybe I’ll go down to flyweight and challenge for his belt,” he said.

Haggerty eyes multi-sport domination after crucial title defense against Superlek

Right now, he is solely focused on keeping the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title against “The Kicking Machine” this weekend. The Thai star is coming in with 10 straight wins across both kickboxing and Muay Thai, and will be aiming to become a two-sport and two-division World Champion for his 11th consecutive victory.

However, should Haggerty successfully stay on atop the division after ONE 168, he wants to get right back to work and shift to defending his other belt before trying to conquer a third sport.

I want to defend my kickboxing belt. I don’t want to hold up the division for too long. You know, I’ve got both belts, Muay Thai and kickboxing, so I would like to keep active, defend the kickboxing belt, defend the Muay Thai belt, and then the MMA belt is definitely my mind,” he said. The ONE Bantamweight MMA World Title is currently held by Fabricio “Wonder Boy” Andrade, whom Haggerty defeated for the vacant kickboxing crown. The Brazilian fighter will no doubt welcome the challenge of the Team Underground and Knowlesy Academy athlete and avenge his loss.

Of course, nothing is set in stone just yet, with a lot of the Englishman’s goals hinged on keeping his belt this Friday. Can he take out Superlek and pursue his quest for more gold?
