Did Jonathan Haggerty's trash talk give him the edge, or was it just mind games?

Two-sport ONE Bantamweight World Champion Jonathan Haggerty is not only known for his fighting skills but also for his trash-talking, which he believes plays a crucial role in his victories by affecting his opponents mentally. Now, he’s gearing up to defend his ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title against ‘The Kicking Machine’ Superlek Kiatmoo9 at ONE: 168 in Denver, scheduled for September 6th.

In his latest video, Haggerty revisited his historic opportunity at the vacant kickboxing belt MMA king Fabricio Andrade. This matchup, according to Haggerty, is what awakened the trash-talker within him.

After defeating Nong-O Hama and claiming the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title, Jonathan Haggerty was offered an opportunity at two-sport glory. He fought for the vacant ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Championship and emerged victorious against Fabricio Andrade.

In a recent video uploaded on his YouTube channel, Haggerty revealed that the rivalry went beyond the fight itself, fueled by trash talk. He stated, “This was a fun one. So yeah, this fight with Andrade—we had a lot of animosity. There was a lot of beef; he brought the trash talk out in me. He talked a good game, and he really talked a lot.”

Haggerty further revealed that when the kickboxing fight was offered to him, he initially thought it would be easier than Muay Thai because of the absence of elbows. However, one complication arose: Fabricio Andrade, also a southpaw, planned to utilize his left hand heavily.

Since his debut in ONE Championship, Jonathan Haggerty has become a crucial fighter for the promotion. In preparation for his fights, Haggerty takes a dedicated approach. He left his comfortable life in the United Kingdom and traveled to Thailand to train for his bout against Nong-O Hama, a decision that paid off handsomely.

He repeated this strategy in his successful title fight against Fabricio Andrade. This dedication ultimately earned him the prestigious status of two-sport ONE Bantamweight World Champion. Recalling his fight camp for the Andrade fight, Jonathan Haggerty revealed, “This was a great fight camp. I did the whole fight camp with my trainer in Thailand. It was probably one of the best fight camps I’ve ever had. If I’m totally honest, I clipped him, and he stumbled once. I saw red and decided to go for it.”
