Can Angela Lee's 'Fight Story' change the way we view mental health in sports?

Two years ago, the combat sports world was shaken by the tragic passing of 18-year-old ONE women’s atomweight MMA contender, Victoria Lee. Initially, the cause of death was undisclosed, but later, her elder sister, Angela Lee, revealed that Victoria had taken her own life because of mental health struggles.

In honor of her sister and to inspire others, Angela created the non-profit organization ‘Fight Story,” dedicated to sharing difficult stories and promoting mental health awareness among athletes. In her latest appearance on the Yanagida Podcast on Spotify, the interviewer inquired about her initiative. Angela expressed her desire to expand “Fight Story” to reach every community.

She emphasized the link between mental, physical, and emotional health, stating, “A lot of people don’t realize just how connected mental health is to physical health and emotional health as well; they all play a part in who we are. It’s funny when people say, ‘I don’t have mental health.’ We all have a brain, so mental health is important for everyone.

While Angela Lee chooses to honor Victoria with Fight Story, her brothers, Christian and Adrian Lee, are doing so in their own way. Recently, Adrian Lee made his ONE Championship debut at ONE 167, defeating Antonio Mammarella in a three-round lightweight MMA fight via second-round submission.

The card was already stacked with the titanic clash between Anatoly Malykhin and “Reug Reug” Oumar Kane, but it just got even more explosive. ONE Championship made the card bigger by booking Christian Lee to defend his ONE Lightweight MMA World Title against the undefeated Alibeg Rasulov.

The showdown is set for November 8th at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Before his older brother Christain Lee competes, Adrian Lee will step into the ONE Championship cage at ONE 168: Denver on September 6th. This marks the promotion’s second event on American soil. Adrian will face promotional newcomer and local hero, Nicolas Cornejo, who is looking to stay undefeated in his professional career.

On a different note, Angela Lee retired from her MMA career to focus on Fight Story and other interests in relation to it that help tell the stories of Victoria and her own. She’s currently working on a biopic titled ‘Unstoppable’ with filmmaker Nainoa Langer. It’s inspiring to see all the Lee siblings excel in their chosen paths. We wholeheartedly wish them continued success in their endeavors.
