Without a doubt, the crash involving Romain Grosjean and Nico Hulkenberg was terrifying. It was fortunate that the latter got out of there in one piece and alive. It certainly proves that like it or not, the HALO cockpit protection device did it’s job well.

Earlier, a video circulated on social media showing the crash from a fan’s point of view. Now, another video has surfaced, showing onboard and 360° footage from both cars.

It has certainly proven itself on a few occasions during the 2018 season. This isn’t the first time this season that Hulkenberg and Grosjean have tangled. They had a collision at the Spanish Grand Prix when the latter spun on his own. At the very next moment, the rear of the rotating Haas came into the trajectory of a startled Hulkenberg who speared into it. Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly was also inadvertently caught in the crash.

Grosjean’s tyre barely missed clobbering Hulkenberg’s helmet. Hulkenberg was again involved in a big crash, this time in Belgium, and of his own doing. He locked up and speared into the back of Fernando Alonso. Alonso’s car then vaulted over an unsuspecting Charles LeClerc who got the shock of his life.

Finally, in the practice session of the Italian GP, Marcus Ericsson lost control and went barrel-rolling wildly. In all these cases, the victims all managed to walk away from their respective crashes.

Coming back to Hulkenberg, there was a hairy moment when the back of his car caught fire. The German, now in panic mode, frantically screamed on the radio to get him out of the car. Fortunately, the marshals were quick to respond and righted the upside-down car without inflicting too much damage.
