Home/Olympics

The wrestling community is shell-shocked. It’s like the universe just flipped. Or the sun decided to rise in the west. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Gable Steveson was supposed to enter Philadelphia and leave with his third NCAA title. But that’s not what went down at the Wells Fargo center. And it feels like reality just slapped us back in the face. But this can’t be undone. Gable Steveson has lost his last match ever. That’s it. That’s the news of the hour.

Steveson was the top seed, who marched into the finals with 2 comfortable wins in the quarterfinals and the semis. Defeating Couhlton Schultz and Owen Trephan looked like child’s play for him. But in the finals against Oklahoma State’s Wyatt Hendrickson, the Gophers heavyweight fell short in the last 10 seconds. And the No. # 2 seed, Hendrickson snatched away the title, which for most of the final was Steveson’s for the taking. Yes, till the last 10 seconds of the third round, it was his. But a brutal late takedown cost him the gold.

And the fans? Well, let’s just say Steveson’s invincible image no longer towers in their minds. And Wyatt Hendrickson? The man who defeated Steveson 5-4 has to be the talk of the town. No wonder a fan commented, Walked on the mat an underdog and walked off it a legend. Go Pokes!!” Hendrickson was assumed to stand no chance against Steveson, the man who was on a 70-win streak. But the former Air Force wrestler who suffered a crushing 18-2 defeat to Gable Steveson in the 2021 national tournament is now the man who broke his winning streak after 6 years.

Here’s what exactly went down on the mat. After holding Wyatt Hendrickson down for the first two periods, Steveon entered the third with a 4-2 lead. But in the final few seconds, Hendrickson pulled off the most unexpected move against the big guy. He pulled off a single leg and quickly turned it into a double leg, which won him a three-point indication. Gable Steveson tried scoring in the final few seconds but alas, the time was over. Nothing good came out of it. And the Oklahoma clan flooded the mat, kicking off the celebrations right away.

And how did Hendrickson react? Well, he went on to say, “It’s bigger than worlds. Olympics, everything.” Hendrickson now becomes the first NCAA national champion in this category after 20 years, for Oklahoma State. And, here’s everything you need to know about the match. But what are the wrestling fans saying? You’ll get that right here.

Well, Hendrickson is a second lieutenant in the US Air Force. And he was congratulated and hugged by President Donald Trump who was present in the arena.  In fact, right after his win, Hendrickson stood up and saluted the President, respecting his presence. Right after he triumphed over the man who at 21 became the youngest freestyle super heavyweight Olympics champion

However, it was Gable Steveson who had initially said that they were going to put on a good show for the President. “He’s coming to watch some of the best wrestling on earth, and we’re going to give that to him,” Steveson said. But when it came to Steveson’s own performance, he could not hold it off to the end.

No wonder another fan commented, “No big man backflip tonight y’all. Wyatt Hendrickson was not afraid.” Truly, Hendrickson looked fearless today. After the win, he said, “My arms never felt so strong.” He even added, “He [Gable Steveson] took a second to relax, and I took advantage of it.”
