The wrestling world has been buzzing about Bo Bassett for years. With a flawless record and a growing legacy, the 17-year-old has been one of the most talked-about names in high school wrestling. But his latest career decision has sparked a myriad of questions from the wrestling community. With his latest destination being the legendary Iowa Hawkeyes, many are curious to see if Bassett is ready.
Bassett has shown exceptional performance, winning eight consecutive Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State championship titles. He became worldwide famous after securing the Cadet World Championships gold medal in the freestyle 45 kg weight class in 2021. This guy is amazing! He has incredible potential on the mat. But despite rumors floating that he might end up going to OSU, he made his stance clear this week.
Bassett’s Iowa has caused a major disruption to the entire wrestling community. Many analysts predicted he would choose Penn State, Virginia Tech, or Oklahoma State. This is because these three schools offered him top recruitment opportunities. But for Bassett, his selection of Iowa exceeded mere education reputation. Iowa has allowed him to achieve a dream he has nurtured since childhood.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, but I think it was the right decision. You get what you earn, so I’m excited to be a Hawk,” he said. The Hawkeyes have a legacy of producing Olympic and NCAA titleholders, and Bassett clearly sees himself continuing that tradition. His statement indicated none of the financial factors came into play since his choice was driven specifically by the opportunity. But for now, all eyes are on the upcoming confrontation with Faith Christian Academy.
Podcaster and wrestling expert Justin Basch highlighted the rising dominance of Bishop McCort in high school wrestling. “This weekend, it’s #1 Faith Christian Academy vs. #2 Bishop McCort, but first, it’s Bishop McCort making some headlines this week! Now with 4 commits to the Top 3 Teams in the country and one to #12 Rutgers, with 2 more on the Matscouts Class of ’26 Big Board.” With three wrestlers in the top-3 programs, Bishop McCort has solidified itself as the future of NCAA prospects.

But amidst all this, Faith Christian Academy and Bishop McCort have been steering toward a championship match this Saturday on the 8th. The contest between these teams started in the 2024 PIAA Team State Championship final, when Faith Christian Academy won by 46-18 points. Faith Christian won their team title at the Ironman tournament by an impressive margin of 35.5 points.
Bishop McCort secured second place thanks to their athletes, Jax Forrest and Bo Bassett. However, Bishop McCort proved its strength at Powerade, clinching the team title behind Melvin Miller’s dramatic final-match victory. The dual between Faith Christian Academy and Bishop McCort promises top billing as top wrestling programs in the nation aim to secure both pride and national dominance.

The high school wrestling community recognizes Bo Bassett as the undisputed best. And this might have something to do with his undefeated record of 111-0. During this run, Bo has cemented his absolute dominance and has claimed victories from Super 32 Powerade and Ironman tournaments. But the rise of his fellow mat specialist Jax Forrest has given rise to some heated discussions.
Jax Forrest has proved his worth in international competitions by earning silver at the U17 World Championships as well as finishing fourth at the U.S. Olympic Trials. He is also a Bishop McCort High School graduate alongside Bo Bassett. The perfect record that Bassett maintains remains indisputable. Yet discussions exist about whether Forrest stands above him since he shows strength against high-level wrestlers. With both ranked No. 1 and No. 2 by FloWrestling, the competition out there is interesting.
The strength of Bassett reached its peak when Bishop McCort faced the Wyoming Seminary, which maintained his unbeatable 719-day winning sequence. During his 150-pound match-up against Wyatt Fry, Bassett showed his greatness once again. He won with a technical fall that lasted 2 minutes 52 seconds and reached 21-5 points.
