Dominating the mat with sheer skill and determination, Bo Bassett has made winning look effortless! Yet, even the most exceptional athletes face challenges, and this season brought one of his toughest yet. Despite an incredible run, Bassett fell short of claiming the high school wrestling championship title after his team’s loss to Christian Faith Academy. Yet as the dust settles, his impact on the sport and his community is clear. It’s far beyond a single result.

Bo Bassett’s remarkable season included a dominant 21-5 technical fall victory over Wyatt Fry, marking his 100th straight high school win. He also helped Bishop McCort bring an end to Wyoming Seminary’s record-breaking 719-day winning run through their 37-17 victory. And if that wasn’t enough, he is also a multi-time Powerade and Super 32 Champion. If you add to that, his victory at the Iron Man tournament is just straight-up crazy, right?

That too at just 17. But now another prestigious honor is to be added to this name as Bassett continues to shock and impress everyone. At the Johnstown City Council meeting on Wednesday night, two local athletes were honored with a special proclamation. Among them was Bo Bassett, the junior wrestling phenom from Bishop McCort. It also included Donte Tisinger, a basketball star from Greater Johnstown.

The council made the statement, “We honored two local athletes that have not only been great athletes but also role models for our community.” The mayor said “Donte Tisinger, from the Greater Johnstown School District basketball team, and also Bo Bassett, who has not only been a local wrestling star but also national and international as well,”  during the ceremony to wjactv.com.

But while the council ended up lauding both the athletes, for Bo it wasn’t enough. After all, despite his undisputable skills, he still failed to win the high school wrestling title. While the mat prodigy showed all the telltale signs of his talent at the 2025 PIAA wrestling championship, his isolated talents weren’t enough to win. But that doesn’t mean Bo didn’t have a good night. He was on a highway of wins, with an easy 1:09 minute victory over Berks Catholics in the semis.

Bassett maintained his outstanding wrestling form during the entire tournament, especially when he defeated Ryan Meredith from Montoursville in 1:43 minutes by securing a terrific 58-8 Crushers victory. Bassett’s dominance did not prevent the team from enduring an agonizing loss during the PIAA state wrestling finals.

The match victory belonged to Faith Christian Academy when they vanquished Bishop McCort with a final score of 34-25. In the 152 lbs weight class of the AA finals, Bo Bassett obtained a decisive victory over Max Stein with a score of 17-9. Yet he was unable to fulfill his promise to win over last year’s loss. It’s not just a one-man team!

Bo Bassett & Bishop McCort Had One Goal—But Did They Deliver?

Despite Bo Bassett and Jax Forrest’s stellar performances, the rest of the Bishop McCort team struggled in the state finals. Forrest, the #2 wrestler in the 127-pound category, continued his unbeaten run with a dominant victory over Mountoursville’s David Kennedy by technical fall in the quarterfinals. He followed it up with a 4:07 win over Bradley Hartranft in the semifinals and clinched another victory in the finals against FCA

. Alongside Forrest, Sam Herring and Devon Margo each triumphed in their respective 145 and 160-pound categories. However, while the top duo of Bassett and Forrest remained undefeated throughout the season, their teammates couldn’t match the same level of success. Unfortunately, FCA took advantage of this, winning all four of the last four weight categories to seal their victory.

Before the match, Bo Bassett had expressed the importance of preparation for the showdown. “I think getting them exposed to the Wyoming Sem match and the duals out in Oklahoma was very important. I know they’ve been looking forward to this since last year after we lost to them in the state final.” He referenced the crushing defeat to Faith Christian Academy (FCA) in the 2024 PIAA Class 2A finals.

He also recalled the tough match against #4 Wyoming Seminary in December 2024. FCA had secured a 32-24 victory. Bassett’s efforts were not enough to secure the desired payback, though. Despite their best efforts, Bishop McCort fell short of Faith Christian Academy in the state finals once again. What does the future hold for Bo Bassett now that he’s being honored as an inspiration, despite missing out on the national title? What are your thoughts on this prodigy?
