“It wasn’t an easy decision, but I think it was the right decision. You get what you earn, so I’m excited to be a Hawk,” Bo Bassett said, reflecting on his decision to move to Iowa Hawkeyes. Bassett’s choice raised many eyebrows, ‘Why Iowa?‘ when powerhouse programs like Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Oklahoma State were all on the table. Furthermore, there were speculations that the wrestling prodigy would settle for Penn State, but he had other plans.

The 18-year-old has time and again proved his mettle on the mat. Winning eight consecutive Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championships has only bolstered his confidence. Remember when Bassett casually took down international competitors at the Cadet World Championships? The Pennsylvania native’s wrestling career is bound to flourish even more in the coming days. Iowa wrestling has always boasted stalwarts like Olympic gold medalist Dan Gable and 2x national champion, Spencer Lee. It only makes sense for the 18-year-old to go for Iowa. Moreover, much like Bassett, it was the same big excitement when AJ Ferrari’s brother, Angelo Ferrari, chose the Hawkeyes over Rutgers and Virginia Tech. What a move!

Bassett posted a strong throwback video on Instagram showing how, from a young wrestler, he has become the face of the program. He captioned, “Saitiev had to go to Siberia! Blessed & Grateful #MachineGunMindset #GloryToGod 1 Corinthians 13:12 🔒in.” Bassett referenced Buvaisar Saitiev, the legendary Russian wrestler who chose to train at an elite Siberian facility, which defined his notable wrestling career. This shows that becoming great requires sacrifice, just like Saitiev, who moved to Siberia. Despite the unknown path ahead, he maintains both gratitude and faith because dedication, along with belief, will guide him to victory. But what captured our attention was Angelo Ferrari’s comment on the post. What did he have to say?

The Texas native did not restrain his excitement, “Let’s go! Can’t wait to work with you brotha 💪.” Ferrari, who made a similar decision to join Iowa despite varied opinions of the outside world, resonates with Bo Bassett. His enthusiasm signals a strong bond forming between the two, one built on shared ambition and a willingness to embrace challenges. The upcoming partnership between these wrestlers may create excellent prospects for Iowa’s wrestling territory.

However, not everyone supports Bassett. Controversy surrounds his decision, raising questions despite his incredible talent.

Bassett faces backlash over his move amidst remarkable performance

Penn State’s Carter Starocci did not mince his words to criticize Bassett’s transfer decision. The four-time NCAA champion took a sharp jab at Bassett on social media but did not directly mention Bassett on his social media, “Don’t forget, fellas, you can’t buy a national title. Those are earned. Have a good night. 🤝🏽, he wrote on X. This comment went viral, raising discussion about college wrestling athletes receiving NIL compensation deals and their role in college wrestling. Others interpreted it as a specific attack against Bassett, wondering if money motivated him to join Iowa wrestling.

During the 2025 PIAA Team Wrestling Championship event, Bassett displayed his dominant wrestling strengths. His final triumph during the semifinal match against Berks Catholic lasted only 1:09 minutes and supported Bishop McCort’s 61-6 victory. Bishop McCort obtained their exciting victory of 58-8 after Bassett secured his 1:43-minute defeat of Ryan Meredith during the Montoursville quarterfinals competitions. In their PIAA state wrestling finals match against Faith Christian Academy, the school earned a 34-25 win that denied Bishop McCort victory. Bassett achieved greatness during the team loss when he submitted Max Stein by a score of 17-9 in the 152 lbs weight class while demonstrating excellent individual abilities despite the team defeat.

With both Bassett and Ferrari now in Iowa, could this duo shape the future of Hawkeyes wrestling and take the wrestling program to new heights? What are your thoughts on this pair? Let us know in the comments.
