The biggest festival of American sport happened this weekend, i.e., the Superbowl. Of course, the game had all the cameras on it as the Eagles flew over the Chiefs, but it wasn’t just Kendrick’s halftime performance that the people watched. The world’s premier indoor track and field event also made a buzz in the media and the American homes, shattering records.

Athletes competed in the 2025 Millrose games in New York this weekend in New York. The 177th annual meet was broadcast by the National Broadcasting Company and is reported to have a record-breaking viewership.

Travis Miller took to Twitter to announce the comeback of the track. The NBC Sports Director of Social Media tweeted “Track is BACK! 📺🙌” with a picture speaking of the 1.2 million viewers averaged by the event. This makes the 2025 Millrose games the most-watched Millrose games after 2019.

Track as a sport has been growing among sports enthusiasts. The sport now is not just an Olympic staple but evolving into a year-round one. In 2024, NBC’s broadcast for a U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials broke a 12-year-old record, recording a viewership of an average of 5.2 million—the highest since 2012.

Viewership isn’t the only record broken this 117th Athletic meet; the runners have run the extra mile, not only shattering records but also creating new benchmarks for themselves and other athletes. The event also had some major upsets, with fan favorites losing.

The Millrose Games 2025

The Fort Washington Armory in NYC will resonate with the 2025 Millrose Games for some months now as the venue of the record-breaking event. Yared Nuguse not only won the Millrose Games, but the praise bronze medalist also set the new world record for the indoor mile with a time of 3:46.63 minutes.

His fellow American, Grant Fisher, didn’t shy from creating a record, though. The two-time Olympic medalist ran three thousand meters in 7:22.91 minutes, the fastest indoor three thousand meters. Fisher received some tough competition from Cole Hocker, who took the lead in the early laps but the Olympian soon decided to show him his mettle. In the final lap, Fisher went wide and pushed Hocker to the finish line.

With this, Fisher showed once again why he’s an Olympian. In a conversation with NBC, he said, “He went by me, and I was thankful to have someone to chase.” Truly a champion mindset. But the Millrose wasn’t all sunshine. As is a twist of fate, Olympic gold medalist and teenage sensation Quincy Wilson ended up fourth in the 600m indoor event. And the man he lost to? Will Sumner, who bagged this win.

But when it comes to the overall success of the event, Millrose 2025 was a big hit. From sponsors to athletes, everyone enjoyed it. The success of this meet could mean that track and field as a sport is making a comeback into people’s hearts and is not just restricted to Olympic fame. That being said, upcoming events like the Grand Slam Track Series and the Border Olympics Track and Field Meet are going to attract audiences. What do you think? Is the sport back? Let’s discuss this in the comments.
