Far from being a newcomer at 19 years old, Hodgkinson earned silver in the Tokyo Olympics 800m race, which showcased her elite racing potential. However, her athletic progress encountered a challenging moment when she had to drop out of a major event.
“We want to make this event an experience like no other—for athletes and fans alike,” Keely said. Hodgkinson announced the Keely Klassic as an athletic event in December 2024 following her BBC Sports Personality of the Year victory. This has raised speculations amongst the track and field community about the reason behind this step.
Former world-class 800m athlete Jenny Meadows took to X to express her thoughts on Hodgkinson’s absence as tweeted by Athletics Weekly. Acknowledging the disappointment, she remained optimistic about the event’s success. She wrote, “Our mourning of ‘what may have been’ has ended, and now we put all our efforts into making the Keely Klassic a fun & successful day. The UK 🇬🇧 needs this event so let’s get behind it! The show must go on!” It captured the bittersweet reality—while Hodgkinson’s absence was unfortunate, the Keely Klassic was still set to be a milestone event for British athletics. But why is Hodgkinson missing such an important event?
