“Can I take a selfie?” “Lemme get that bib!” And what not! The younglings in the U.S. Indoors crowd were buzzing to interact with Quincy Wilson after his 400m opening heat. But what had he done for that sentiment to arise? Well, the 17-year-old just kicked off his first-ever U.S. Indoor Championships appearance with a 46.41s win! A come-from-behind victory, the race saw Wilson narrowly taking over Demarius Smith and Matthew Boling in the final stretch to now make yet another U.S. final through an auto spot. And his comments on these heroics? See for yourself!
Quincy Wilson ensured his win streak stayed alive. After all, the 400m has been his sweet spot for a while now. His last 2 races in the distance? A high school national record at the New Balance Grand Prix and a U18 outdoors world record at the Holloway Pro Classic in December. But this time, he was against a field stacked with pros, which is enough to crumble any high schooler, right? However, the Bullis junior showed exactly why he’s different. Staten Island just went wild watching him blow past the U.S. Indoors heats on Saturday. And from the audacious warning he has dropped afterward, it looks like this is only the beginning…
Post the race, Quincy Wilson was seen speaking to a bunch of reporters. That’s where he was asked if he actually had to run a lot on the outside in order to get that win. To be precise, where does he find that extra gear? To which Wilson replied, “Oh, it’s my grit. My determination. I don’t like to lose. I’m ready, and I’m hungry.” Well, yes, if it hadn’t been for that last-minute hunger drive that gave him milliseconds worth of a lead, Wilson would have been out of the field. After all, there was just 0.35s between the fastest and the slowest time on that heat. Like, just look at it, how super small that time is!

Also, reflecting on his motto to run at the U.S. Indoors, Quincy Wilson added, “Great environment. Great place to meet. I just can’t wait to show what I’ve got to do.” Clearly, this sounds like a warning! Looks like there’s a lot he has been saving in the tank, and that ought to come out in the semifinals now. Or we would rather say, it has to! Because Wilson may have won his heat fair and square, but if you see how he fared against the other heat winners, the numbers are concerning!

Across all the qualified athletes for the men’s 400m semifinals at the U.S. Indoor Championships 2025, Wilson clocked the slowest time. Yes, read that again! Chris Bailey, the world leader in the distance, topped the field with a 45.15s time, followed by Jacory Patterson at 2 with 45.45, and the list continues, including Vernon Norwood at the 5th spot with 45.96 on the board. But the confidence that Wilson is showing despite this is commendable. After all, he doesn’t tremble at the sight of challenges, like today, when he came in from lane 2 to execute the race. When asked if getting an inside lane was a challenge for him, Wilson tossed it, “No, it’s just another thing that was thrown at me.”
Clearly, every word in his post-race interviews screamed ‘confidence.’ And why wouldn’t it? He just redeemed himself after pulling off a revenge win against a fellow high schooler at the U.S. indoors. Any idea who he was? Here are the details!
Quincy Wilson completes Millrose revenge against Will Sumner
Well, yes, if you remember, 2025 didn’t have an ideal start for Quincy Wilson after he was handed 2 early losses. The first one was to Andrew Salvodon, the 500m winner at the VA Showcase, and the other was to Will Sumner, who had defeated Wilson at the 2025 Millrose Games, clocking 1:14.04 to become the No. 3 600m all-time performer.

But how did Wilson pull off this redemption move? Well, when Quincy Wilson lined up for the 2025 U.S. Indoors heat, Will Sumner was part of that very lineup. But in the distance that’s Wilson’s forte, the 400m, Sumner was no match for the Bullis high school junior. Clocking 46.76, Sumner finished last out of the 5 runners in the heat, while Wilson came out right at the top!

This meant Sumner’s U.S. indoors and Worlds qualification dreams would have to wait a little longer. But the victory would have pumped a lot of confidence into Wilson. And hearing his post-race words, it looks like it sure did! What do you think about the semis? Can Wilson drop the time and outperform the pros or be washed away in that stacked field?
