If you ask what the dream of any sprinter is, chances are they’ll say it is making it to the Olympics. But does every such journey end in glory at the end? Well, no. Just ask the likes of Sha’Carri Richardson or Gabby Thomas. But while many are broken by the lack of a podium finish, one British Sprinter has channeled her pain into motivation. But what’s so special about that? Well, the Brit missed the podium not once but twice at Paris 2024. But now she’s ready for a new target. What is it, you ask? Well, let’s give you a hint. It is worth a Hundred Grand.
Well, the athlete we are referring to is none other than the British track star, Daryll Neita. Competing in Paris, Neita secured the 4th place in the women’s 100m and fifth place in the 200m category. Surely, it did sting a lot. After all, failure at the Olympics meant she would have to do it all over again and try again after 4 more years. Thankfully, Neita is one of the few elite athletes who know how to give up. Thus, come April 2025, Neita is embarking on a new journey. And a rather lucrative one as well!
With the Grand Slam Track set to kick off in Jamaica this April. And ahead of her race, Neita doubled down on her never-back-down approach. In an exclusive interview with Athletics Weekly, Neita stated that she has used her Paris failure as a motivation. “One hundred per cent. I poured every single ounce of my being into those performances. Not a night goes by that I don’t think about how close I was, but it does give me the motivation to stay grounded and stay positive,” said Neita.

She further stated that she was focusing more on the important things that mattered. And oozing out confidence, Neita dropped quite a bold statement. Reverberating her iron-clad mentality, Neita stated, “I truly believe that I can be on that individual podium.” Surely, this is the kind of confidence that can make her fulfill her dream of chasing $200k. Taking part in both the 100m and the 200m categories in the Grand Slam Track, Neita aims to win both.

And with the $100,000 prize money for each category, winning $200,000 might not be a distant dream. Surely, Neita can dream. She has also expressed her interest in competing in Jamaica. Comparing Grand Slam Track with Athlos, Neita stated that taking up new opportunities excites her the most. On similar lines, the British track and field star also reflected on her thoughts about competing in the Grand Slam Track.

Daryll Neita is no stranger to the challenge of doubling up in sprint events. More so because she has frequently competed in both the 100m and 200m at major championships. But with Grand Slam Track introducing a fresh twist to the competition, she acknowledges the added complexity. “For the short sprints, I think we’re quite fortunate in a way because they are the events that we usually do, so it’s going to feel pretty normal for me,” she says, recognizing the familiarity of her races.
However, she notes that the event as a whole pushes athletes beyond their comfort zones. Neita is particularly intrigued by the crossover aspect of Grand Slam Track, where specialists in one event must excel in another. Also, emphasizing the test of versatility, she added, “Here you have to be good at both things to get the prize.” Daryll believes this format will highlight untapped strengths in athletes, revealing abilities that typically remain unseen in traditional competitions.

The unpredictability of it all, from hurdlers transitioning to flat sprints to sprinters stepping outside their usual domain, adds an element of excitement. As a spectator, too, Neita’s excitement is sky-high. She is most eager to watch the short hurdles. Neita shared, “It’s going to be really exciting seeing girls running over the 100m hurdles and then running the 100m flat.”
The prospect of hurdle specialists delivering blazing times without barriers excites her, and she even suggests that it could lead to more hurdlers making appearances in the 100m sprint. The fusion of speed and adaptability is what makes the Grand Slam Track an unmissable spectacle in her eyes.
