Usain Bolt, the legendary Jamaican sprinter, has remained out of reach of most of his opponents. However, when it came to making financial investments, things were different. Even the Lightning Bolt could not seemingly escape the grasp of the looming frauds. As per reports, Bolt has lost over $12.7 million of his savings after investing in an account under the name Welljen with Stocks and Securities Limited. The shocking details came to the forefront back in 2024, and immediately, Bolt and his attorney were quick to address the situation.

Back in January 2023, Bolt found out that $12.7 million of his investments with the Kingston-based SSL had resulted in fraud. Not only Bolt, but a lot of people too became the victims of the scam and a total of $30 million was found missing. Bolt has never directly responded on this matter, however. Instead, he has posted multiple cryptic messages about the same.

In a recent appearance from The Fix Productions, Bolt stated that he received a significant number of international calls trying to gather in-depth information about the same. However, Bolt has always tried to remain on the safe side and decided not to speak much. That is until now, when the track legend finally decided to give his statement regarding the whole charade.

Finally opening up, Usain mentioned, “But now, at some point, I have to start saying something. Now I have to be careful because now you’re looking at everybody sideways. If this happens to me and it’s going to be two years and I can’t see back, I can’t say I’ve received a dime.”Meanwhile, a narrative began to spread that none of Bolt’s investments reached the SSL in the first place.

However, none of this was true as the payments were made via bank transfers and the Kingston-based SSL had also acknowledged the payments in writing. Back in 2023, the SSL released a statement that accused a former employee of the organization of being involved in fraudulent activity. SSL also launched an investigation for the employee and has taken adequate preventive measures.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force also stated back then that an extensive investigation was being launched about the SSL. The official statement by the force claimed, “alleged fraudulent activities at (SSL), which are said to have affected the accounts of Mr. Usain Bolt among other individuals.” Unfortunately, things did not seem to materialize as planned. But Bolt’s Gordon has something to say on all this.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Usain Bolt a victim of fraud, or should he have been more cautious with his investments?

Usain Bolt’s attorney makes detailed claims in latest mail

While, despite the incident being two years, Bolt has no clarity on recovery, his attorney, Linton P. Gordon, has stated that this loss is not a small one. Gordon stated in 2023 that the funds were part of Bolt’s retirement funds. Thus, it is evident that this will have a direct impact on the quality of life Usain Bolt will lead in the future.

In a recent development, however, Gordon has written an elaborate email highlighting the suspicious activities involving the entire fiasco. A detailed email came to the forefront about Mr. Gordon and pointed out how Usain Bolt has been a victim of harassment for the last two years.

Taking matters to the Supreme Court, Bolt’s attorney stated in the mail, “Furthermore, Mr. Ken Tomlinson, who was appointed by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) to take temporary management of SSL, found records confirming these lodgements and has attested to them in the Supreme Court.” The mail also denoted that the Jamaican Prime Minister had also invested in the same SSL.

Thus, this point downplays the fact that Bolt was careless in assessing his risks while investing. Otherwise, it would imply that everyone who put their faith in the SSL has been careless. However, not all blame resides with Bolt’s decisions, as the SSL was a government-accredited body that was also licensed with the FSC.

Gordon continues, “Every citizen has the right to rely on the government entity that is responsible for assessing and regulating such institutions. There now appears to be an organized effort to shift blame onto The Honorable Usain Bolt for his loss—when he is guilty of nothing more than investing in the country that he loves.”

Gordon’s mail also doesn’t fail to question the actions of the government, as all the complaints against his plaintiff, Mr. Bolt, were simply trying to blame the victim for being a victim. In addition to this, the attorney also tried to make efforts to, “absolve the government of its failure to protect the public and those defrauded by SSL.” Thus, it is evident that the situation related to Usain Bolt has become quite sensitive. It now remains to be seen how things pan out in the future.
