Thank you to Saalbach, all of the organizers, and FIS for pulling together an incredible event… to all of the athletes for the incredible competition… that has been wonderful to take part in and to watch!” she wrote.

On February 11 at the FIS Alpine Skiing World Championships in Saalbach, Austria, the American ski queen teamed up with Breezy Johnson, her childhood friend. Incredible! Teamwork strengthened their performance. Talk about their exceptional individual abilities along with their combined talent.
Edging out Swiss superstars Lara Gut-Behrami and Wendy Holdener by 0.39 seconds, this was Mikaela and Breezy’s moment. Kudos to their incredible bond and skiing abilities! Moreover, considering the challenges both athletes had been facing, this was a huge milestone.
In addition to Mikael’s suffering from injury, Breezy returned to World Cup competition in December. She was serving a three-month anti-doping suspension. But despite this victory, the 15-time champion’s road to redemption hasn’t been an easy one.
Mikaela Shiffrin’s Journey Back to the Top
Mikaela Shiffrin’s return to the slopes has been nothing short of a battle, not just physically but mentally. After the crash in Killington on November 30, Shiffrin sustained severe trauma to her oblique muscles. The recovery time wasn’t just about healing her body. It was also about confronting the mental scars of the accident.
Shiffrin herself admitted the difficulty of battling the psychological aftermath, describing how she struggled with
“PTSD-esque” fears. She had to withdraw from defending her giant slalom title. In her Instagram post, she opened up about the challenge of facing her anxiety. That is especially during the Grand Slalom, but through it all, Shiffrin has continued to fight back.

“There are some obvious challenges I face to keep improving to get to the point of fighting for podiums by the end of the season. It’s a step-by-step process,” she said. Shiffrin’s comeback is a true testament to her resilience. Mikaela Shiffrin entered the 2025 World Championships with the weight of expectations on her shoulders.
She also hoped to clinch her 16th World title. But despite a strong start, fate had other plans. In a fiercely competitive field, Shiffrin found herself falling short, finishing in fifth place with a time of 1:59:37. This was quite the heartbreak for the perennial champ as the Swiss duo of Camille Rast and Wendy Holdener took the top places. With times of 1:58:00 and 1:58.46, these two were comfortably at the top.

Just behind them was Austrian Katharina Liensberger (1:59.32). But Shiffrin’s teammate Paul Moltzan made sure that Team USA got another top-5 finish. The American ended up on fourth with a time of 1:59:34. But this wouldn’t be a moment of solace for Shiffrin since she has long been known as a Giant Slalom specialist.
As the Austrian Alps echoed with the anticipation of witnessing history, the fans had to settle for witnessing the champion finish outside the top spot. Unable to capture the elusive 16th title, the question is simple.
