

Grenadian track and field athlete Kirani James has worked hard to make his presence louder in the track world. From global men’s 400 m events to winning gold, silver, and bronze in the 2012 London, 2016 Rio, and 2021 Tokyo Olympics, respectively. James has even won all three medals at the World Athletic Championships in different years.
Fast forward to 2024, James made his debut at the USATF Bermuda Grand Prix on April 28, 2024, in Devonshire. James demonstrated his abilities by winning the 400-meter sprint with an incredible time of 46.00 seconds, despite struggling with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition that affects thyroid function. Kirana James’s hard work and resilience helped him reach a point where he became one of the 13 athletes honored by the University of the West Indies (UWI), and James received an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree for his contributions to Grenada’s sports.

Meet Kirani James’ parents
Dorrani Marshall and Annie James are Kirani James’s parents. Kirani’s father was a basketball player, and his mother’s death left him in hardship in 2019. Annie died in 2019 due to renal failure. Afterwards, he gathered himself and came back on track with a bang. Ultimately won the Olympics bronze in 2021 as well. James’s older brother, Gary, was a gifted athlete, and his father, Dorani, represented Grenada in basketball.

“In terms of all the sports he can do, he was possibly more talented than Kirani,” stated Albert Joseph, James’ childhood coach in Gouyave. With Joseph’s help, James realized that track was his best chance of receiving a college scholarship in the United States, even if he played basketball. It was only at the age of 13, James claimed, that after winning the 400 and placing second in the 200 at the Caribbean Union of Teachers Games in St. Lucia, it started to appear feasible.

What is Kirani James’ parents’ nationality?
Kirani James, star sprinter from Grenada, was born on September 1, 1992, in the coastal town of Gouyave, in Saint John Parish. He’s the son of Annie James and Dorrani Marshall, both proud Grenadian natives who’ve supported him throughout his journey on the track.

Kirani James once said, “The stereotype with the Jamaicans and the Trinidadians is that they always do good.” Per Deccan Herald, he also added, “But I realized that even though I’m from a small island, I did that good and I can compete with the best of the Caribbean and ultimately the best in the world. I mean, from there my whole mindset just changed.” With this mindset, Kirani James is only showing moving forward.
