Tokyo Olympics 2020 Fencing Results: China and Romania Emerge Unlikely Winners in Women’s Epee Championships

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 really picked up the action on the second day, with fencing having three winners crowned. The women’s ?p?e category witnessed some intense battles. From the beginning of the day to the end, athletes sweated it out in their lam?s to clinch gold.

Women’s ?p?e finals at the Tokyo Olympics 2020

The women’s ?p?e competition kicked off with two round of 64 matches, with Singapore’s Tikanah Abdul Rehman and Russia’s Aizanat Murtazaeva qualifying. The round of 32 kicked off with the Russian Aizanat beating Korean fencer Choi In-jeong. It ended with a cracking battle between world #1 Ana Maria Popescu and Singapore’s Tikanah. Despite a spirited attempt, the world #1 triumphed over Tikanah.

In the women’s round of 16, we witnessed a China vs China match between Yiwen Sun and Minghye Zhu. Sun triumphed and absolutely shredded the rest of the field. We’ll get to that later, but another round of 16 match received a ton of attention. Russia’s Aizanat Murtazaeva took out US’ Kelley Hurley, leaving the US utterly hapless in another event.

The quarterfinals witnessed a spirited performance from Estonians, with one losing to the world #1 and won securing a date with Ana Marie. Yiwen Sun demolished Italy’s Federica Isola, and Aizanat showcased the same fire that fueled her to the semifinals.

Who ended up with the medals in the women’s ?p?e finals?

The first semifinal saw Aizanat Murtazaeva’s incredible run end at the hands of China’s Yiwen Sun. Sun once again blazed a trail to a historical win and booked a date with the world #1. The Romanian Ana Marie beat her Estonian rival Katrina Lehis to book a date with Yiwen Sun.

For the bronze medal, Lehis Katrina beat Aizanat Murtazaeva and secured a place on the podium. That match served as the perfect appetizer to the epic final, where the Chinese fireball Yiwen Sun faced the legendary world #1 Ana Marie.

In shocking fashion, the Rio 2016 gold medalist fell to Yiwen Sun in a wonderfully entertaining bout. However, she adds a silver medal to her tally of international accolades. It’s ironic that Sun, the Rio silver medalist, won gold, but it was the perfect way to cap off a day of fencing.
