Ohio-born Simone Biles and the rest of the US Olympics gymnastics contingent skipped the Tokyo opening ceremony on the weekend. Biles, who won 5 medals at the Rio Olympics 2016, spoke about why she decided against attending the ceremony amidst the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
“The amount of standing is crazy. The USA is usually at the end as well because alphabetical. We start the following day. So it wouldn?t be smart,” Biles said in an Instagram Q&A session.
Biles is currently with the US Olympic team featuring the likes of Jordan Chiles, and Grace McCallum. The women’s gymnastics team had a coronavirus scare earlier in the week when alternate Kara Eaker returned a positive test. Following that coach, Cecile Landi decided that the team should vacate the Olympic Village and move to a hotel in order to keep from possible coronavirus exposure.
