Home/Olympics

Have LA’s plans to be the next Olympics host burned to ash with the wildfires? Well, this question is the next big thing that’s raging across the country. After all, 2028 was supposed to be the year for the US to host the coveted Games after 32 years. Sure, scale-up was on their agenda, but rebuilding? It surely wasn’t. And now, another suggestion has come in for the city vis-à-vis the LA Olympics.

And to top it all, the US just got its newest leader as well. On January 20, their 47th president, Donald Trump, took the oath. And returned to power. This comes in at a time when LA 2028 is already in big jeopardy. And the city might have to rely on its pocket if its preparations overrun the budget. Plus, the $6.8 billion spent already is now placed on thin ice. Amidst all this uncertainty, a U.S. Congressman is suggesting Donald Trump make an affirmative decision regarding the Games.

For those who aren’t aware, we’ll break it out to you. Congressman Jim Jordan has tossed a piece of advice for the newly sworn-in President, Trump. He’s said that the President should consider shifting the Olympics from Los Angeles to a “red city where you know things are going to be run properly,” as he told Newsmax. Florida, Dallas, or even Miami, he’s okay with any of these pitches! Jim Jordan also highlighted, “I do think the American people rightly see how poorly that state is being run and how poorly these tragic fires have been handled by the governor. And, of course, the mayor there in Los Angeles.”

Well, much like Jordan, we see how Los Angeles’ plans to be the mega host have gone up in smoke. The deadly Palisades fire was meters away from reducing the Olympic golf venue, the Riviera Country Club, to a ramshackle. And well, the Eaton fire just came close enough to destroy the Rose Bowl. The Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, which will host archery, BMX, and skateboarding events, had a narrow escape too. But still, Jordan’s suggestion for the LA Olympics to just pack up and move is hardly practical.

Also, how could people ignore the reassuring statements that are coming in? The Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has said that the state is already working with President Donald Trump to hatch a ‘Marshall Plan’ that brings the LA Olympics right back into the spotlight. Also, Paul Krekorian, from LA’s Office of Major Events, assured, “While our focus remains on healing and rebuilding, there is no reason to believe that the fires will adversely impact or delay preparations for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which are already well underway.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is Jim Jordan's idea to move the Olympics to a 'red city' a practical solution or political stunt?

Have an interesting take?

Amidst all this, Jim Jordan’s suggestion may sound exciting for those who aren’t aware of how the Olympics function. Fortunately, the fans are.

Sports fans react to Donald Trump moving the LA Olympics

One of the fans took to the Redditt thread and commented, “My understanding is, that’s impossible unless the IOC agrees to it, and the IOC would never agree to it.” Well, the fan is correct, as this opinion is every bit impractical. The Olympics are certainly among the most complicated events on the planet, and the host locations are picked by the International Olympic Committee during a secret ballot vote.

Given this, the decision to shift the Olympics is off the charts for a country president. One of the fans even joked how far-fetched this idea was: “The IOC’s minimum bribe is outside of Trump’s budget.” But yes, the IOC can very much make that call. Even back in 1908, the IOC wanted Rome as host, but the Games shifted to London after Mount Vesuvius erupted, reducing Naples to dust. And a similar shift was proposed in 1924, when Paris was under water thanks to the floods and economic struggles. That’s when Los Angeles offered to be a replacement. But, it wasn’t needed, since France managed to pull things off in time.

Yet, fans strongly resented Jim Jordan’s opinion. Another one clarified, “Olympics are awarded to a city. Not a country. Can’t be moved.” Also, much before the LA Olympics, the city is turning host to the FIFA World Cup matches in 2026 and the Super Bowl in 2027. Now, the interesting part is, that the FIFA venue is also close to the areas that were burned down. Still, there have been no talks to move out the matches. So why is the fuss only around the Olympics?

Also, fans questioned what could be a possible replacement city for the LA Olympics in the U.S. One of them presented a harsh opinion stating, “Exactly! LA has most of the facilities ready to go. Imagine the pressure to put that on another city and have everything ready within a 3-year time frame. Such nonsense.”

Yes, manpower to rebuild is a huge concern. There will have to be plans, contracts, sanctions, and subcommittees to rebuild the whole city. And that means hours of work for the stakeholders. After all, nearly 12,000 structures have been destroyed. It is going to take time to rebuild. But it’s either that or having to terminate the host city contract that L.A. signed after the organizers pleaded their case to the IOC officials under specific circumstances.

Another concern is whether any other city has the infrastructure. We know the IOC strictly advises against the construction of new venues for host cities. They recommend using the existing ones. So which of the red-run cities as proposed by Jim Jordan can replace LA? One of the fans answers that with, “There are zero red-run towns that are big enough to manage the Olympics. Tulsa 2028 is not what the world has in mind for the summer Olympics.”

Well, it’s clear. Fans are not ready to watch the LA Olympics shift anywhere but the nation’s second-largest city. Also, the California governor, who is now calling LA the ‘Recovery Games’, feels this is President Donald Trump’s time to shine. But can the President do that? Let us know your opinion below!
