“It’s not just about hitting the routine. It’s about how well I can perform each skill and how well I can stick the landing.” These words point out both precision and dedication, which define Oregon State Gymnastics under Tanya Chaplin’s leadership. The Beavers operate at unprecedented levels this season while being under intense observation because the scoring system has now become more precise.

The coaching leadership behind OSU Gymnastics extends beyond Tanya Chaplin, while her husband, Michael Chaplin, joins her as a partner in directing the team. Oregon State Gymnastics achieved national prominence through the power of the Chaplins, who act together as both husband and wife. What a coaching team! The Beavers have won consecutive titles during this season, which highlights their partnership and deserves further examination.

Who is Tanya Chaplin’s husband?

As Michael Chaplin observed Tanya Service coaching for the first time, he recognized that she would become a future star in college gymnastics. But it wasn’t just her star-studded resume—including being a two-time Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year and 1983 World Championship all-around finalist as well as a 1984 Olympic trials competitor—that drew his attention.

It was her abilities that brought out the best in athletes while inspiring self-belief among them. “Going through the elite program has its challenges. So when I fell in love with team gymnastics, that really uncovered the love I had for the sport when I was young again,” she shared, as quoted by collegegymnews.com.

Tanya found college gymnastics astonishing because it brought her new discoveries about physical training and athletic potential. Through this experience, her mental outlook transformed into newfound enthusiasm and she set a vision to become a gymnastics coach. And Michael? He could appreciate this state of mind better than anyone else.

As Oregon State’s associate head coach, Michael Chaplin carries an identical background to Tanya. He has experience as a UCLA gymnast. They even won the 1987 NCAA championship trophy. His sister Kelly Chaplin introduced gymnastics to him through her role as a former Arizona gymnast.

Both Tanya and Michael Chaplin have dedicated their lives to gymnastics, which resulted in creating an exceptional program for Oregon State. This wasn’t just a coaching duo! The combined pair brought the right elements into the team, which extended beyond their training relationship.

When did Tanya Chaplin get married?

“When I got into coaching, I just fell in love,” Tanya Chaplin, née Service, once said, as quoted by collegegymnews.com. And that love? She developed the sport infrastructure as a means to build an athletic condition that enabled athletes to sound their best. For the past 26 seasons, she has served as the heart and soul of the Oregon State gymnastics team while developing a heritage focused on performance and energetic motivation of her athletes.

Both Michael Chaplin and Tanya shared their passion for team gymnastics during his time as a UCLA gymnast prior to becoming an Oregon State associate head coach. The sport of gymnastics brought them together, but their romantic journey started at UCLA after they met. In 1992, both Tanya and Michael had progressed from being former Bruins to being couples and co-executives in their roles as team coaches.

Their fervor for collegiate gymnastics served as the essential base that built their partnership. “The collegiate atmosphere and team aspect are something [that’s] unique. I loved it. It was fulfilling,” Michael once shared, as quoted by collegegymnews.com. “Much like Tanya, I think we both had a passion for collegiate team competition and were drawn far more to that than maybe trying to go into club and go into the elite route.”

Collegiate gymnastics gives more than competition. Providing a vital experience based on the development of teamwork and camaraderie according to Michael’s perspective. The year 1997 brought them to Oregon State so they could establish lasting teamwork at the institution. They started their coaching duties at OSU. Launching what turned out to be an influential coaching period for OSU gymnastics!

Who are Tanya Chaplin’s kids?

Some gymnasts experience implicit parental pressure to become gymnasts when their parents represent at a high level as coaches. But not for Alana Chaplin! The daughter of the powerful duo Tanya and Michael Chaplin, who were part of Oregon State Gymnastics. She took a separate career direction.

“My parents never pressed me about going into gymnastics,” Alana once shared to goviks.com. “But I knew I’d be just another gymnast in the family, and I’d always be compared to them. I wanted to make my own path in a different sport.” And well, she did take an entirely different path!

However, the usual pattern for collegiate tennis players who grew into their athletic abilities during childhood years did not apply to Alana as she first pursued basketball. Alana met her future tennis destiny through Colby Jager during his time as both coach and teacher at Timberhill Tennis Club in Corvallis.

Jager advised Alana to choose between basketball and tennis because competitive college admissions required athletes to fully commit to single sports for scholarship opportunities to bring in college opportunities. The careful recommendation from Jager changed her decision to focus solely on tennis as she began her education at Corvallis High School.

“She’s competing with people who have been eating, sleeping, and living tennis two or three times longer than she has,” Jager noted. “But she works out at the championship level. I think she can be as good as she wants to be.” The constant work ethic Alana demonstrates proves that competitive spirit among the Chaplin family reaches beyond gymnastics.
