January 2019, when notifications went off on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and whatever social media exists out there. Reason? An extremely difficult floor dance routine was performed elegantly by a 20-year-old gymnast; this was none other than the UCLA alumna, Katelyn Ohashi. Born to Richard and Diana Ohashi, the gymnast always had very hard-working people behind her.
In her very own words, “everyone around me has worked so hard and gone through hardship, and has had to struggle just as much.” Katelyn’s parents have been the very basis of her journey, from putting her into training ever since she was 18 months old to being her back when she struggled. Let’s know who exactly Richard and Diana are.

Who is Katelyn Ohashi’s mother?
If we were to thank someone for making us witness the elegance of the American gymnast, it has to be her mother, Diana Ohashi. Diana was herself a gymnast when she was in high school in Germany. Yup, the mother of the six-time All-American was born and raised in Germany. We do not know when she came to America, and even a very little is known about her accomplishments there; her biggest one came after her daughter was born.
Born on January 25, 1957, Diana was a coach at the Great American Gymnastics Express (GAGE) in Blue Springs, Missouri for 30 years, the very place she trained her daughter to swing on bars and grace the floor ever since she was 18 months old. Sadly, she left for heaven on May 31, 2023, at the age of 75, having lived a life of love and pride. Thanks to her children and husband, Richard.
Who is Katelyn Ohashi’s father?
Pick up any of Katelyn’s meet and you would find an old Asian man in the crowd; this is none other than her father, Richard Ohashi. Burdened with the responsibility to be an Electrical Service Representative at the South Service Center, the girl’s dad has always been the backbone of her daughter.

After the video went viral in 2019, Richard was interviewed by Valerie Szopa. The then 44-year-old told the press that he was proud of what his daughter was becoming, and this was beyond the gymnastics; he said, “I am so proud to see the young woman she has become. Not only for her gymnastic skills, but for her blog ‘Behind the Madness,’ her poetry, her composure during interviews, knowing what she wants to do in life and the role model she is for all the young kids that follow her.”
The utility expert brought to attention the poet Katelyn hid in her and one damn thing he is very right about is the role model the 2013 American Cup winner is. Richard has always been an amazing father, not only to her daughter but also to her three elder brothers as well, some of whom took to the bars and floor.

Who are Katelyn Ohashi’s gymnast brothers?
Ohashi’s credits her success not just to her parents, who were always there for her but also to her siblings. She has three older brothers: Ryan, Kyle and Kale. Out of these three, Kalen is the youngest brother and is currently an assistant at WOGA Gymnastics. Kyle is a successful corporate card administrator who works at Nordstrom in Renton, Washington.
Her oldest brother Ryan is actually her half-brother and is her mother’s child from an earlier relationship. Katelyn and Kalen are both carrying on the legacy of their mother through their gymnastics endeavors. Since retiring from the mat, Katelyn now works on her blog and focuses on helping spread body positivity.
