If you’ve been following Michigan State gymnastics, you’ve probably heard the name Gabrielle Stephen echoing through Jenison Field House. And rightfully so. On February 25, she etched her name deeper into the program’s history by being named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week—her first title this season and the third of her career. She earned the honor twice last year, but this one feels different. Why? It comes amid a season where Michigan State is making waves.

The Spartans have been unbeatable on their home turf, holding a pristine 5-0 record at Jenison. Their overall run? An impressive 14-3. With every flawless flip and powerful dismount, Gabrielle has been a driving force behind those numbers. She also holds a special place in the program’s history, being only the second Michigan State gymnast to claim the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week title—a testament to her growing legacy. But the season isn’t over yet. Far from it.

The Big Ten Championships on March 22 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, mark Gabrielle Stephen’s one of the final chance to showcase her brilliance in collegiate gymnastics. With her phenomenal form and decorated career, she’s sure to be a standout. But behind her commanding presence on the mat are two unwavering supporters—her parents. From early morning practices to cross-country competitions, they’ve been by her side, sacrificing and cheering every step of the way. Their emotional and logistical dedication has been instrumental in helping Gabrielle reach this elite level. So, as she takes the stage one last time, it’s worth celebrating the powerful role her parents have played in her journey.

Who is Gabrielle Stephen’s father?

When it comes to Gabrielle Stephen’s biggest fans, her father, Patrick Stephen, is right at the top of the list—literally flipping out for his daughter’s team. A regular watcher of college gymnastics, Patrick isn’t just a proud dad in the stands—he’s the one who brings humor and flair to the sport. How?

Back in 2022, he made a bold (and hilarious) promise during a conversation with Pete Schulte, the father of Gabrielle’s teammate, Skyla Schulte. With playful confidence, Patrick joked that he would do a backflip if Michigan State hit the elusive 198.000 mark that season. Well, the Spartans did just that during their meet against LIU and BGSU in 2023—and Patrick, true to his word, followed through. But it didn’t stop there.

“I was reminding him at the beginning of this year, I was like—don’t forget, it’s coming, so be ready. I wasn’t expecting to see the video so soon after we had finished competing though…we sat down and we were eating and then I looked at my phone. He texted us and it was video of him doing a backflip. I knew it was coming and it was just so funny to watch.” That’s how the Stephens from Elgin, Illinois, are living the gymnastics dream—with dedication, love, and a whole lot of fun.
