“The little girl in me would look for you in every single room she walks into,” Adria once indulged us all in her admiration for her sister Simone Biles. And it was not just admiration, Adria had a sister she could blindly trust through thick and thin…and well, fun times! In a 2016 essay for ESPN, the former gymnast revealed, “When we were little kids, we’d stand on a railing on the second floor of our house, then jump off onto the couch down below on the first floor. She’d go first, and I’d follow. We were both gymnasts, so we were always trying things around the house. Nothing scared her.”

Surely, “fearless” is the correct word that Adria uses to describe Simone. The two have a long history behind them: a mother addicted to substance abuse, sharing a foster home for three years, and finally being adopted by their maternal grandparents, Ronald and Nellie Biles. And just like misery loves company, good times do too. All through the tough days, Adria had one person to look up to and know she could follow without thinking twice.

However, there is one incident from 2012 that might have scarred Adria for life even if she was initially all hands to jump into another chapter of life with Simone because who knew 13 years ago one of the rooms would be at the DMV?

Although their sisterly dynamics was not damaged, but Adria lost her trust in her elder sister for a second when the 23-time World Champion revealed in her book Courage to Soar, released in Nov 2016, that she got her parents to buy her a car for her 16th birthday. But this was not why Adria’s faith in her sister teetered.

You see, back in March 2012 Simone was on a European gymnastics tour. While the competition where she won the all-around title was enough distraction to keep her from thinking about the gift and vice versa, the very first thing the newly turned 16-year-old did was look for a turquoise blue Ford Focus which Ron described as “one of the safest cars for teens right now.”

She went straight to driveway, no car. She then went to the garage, and again, no car. However, being jet-legged, the rising star went to bed. Simone woke up to her sister saying, “Hey Simone, I got you a birthday present.” And the present? A huge packet with zebra-printed car interiors. Sister really knew what Simone wanted! But it didn’t take long for things to go down South with the two sisters.

You see, the zebra prints motivated Ron to teach Simone how to drive. She already had her learner’s permit that she got a year ago as a 15-year-old. Simone recalled in her book, “My dad taught me the basics in a huge, empty parking lot. Then it was time to take the show on the road.” Except, she didn’t just go on a road, but a busy highway! Remember the first time you drove a car with a minimum experience? Yeah, that happened!

According to Simone in Courage to Soar, “I was so tense that my legs were like sticks that wouldn’t bend. I was actually sore the next day.” And here’s where her then 13-year-old sister came in. “The whole time, Adria was in the backseat of the car yelling, ‘We’re gonna die! She’s gonna kill us all!” The gymnast’s reaction now? “Thanks, sis!”

The intense pressure coming with embracing the challenge caught Simone most unexpectedly and unlike always, Adria couldn’t follow her elder sister’s lead this time.

Still, Simone Biles made sure to bring her sister home safely with no damages to themselves or the car. In fact, just a few weeks down the line, the 23x World Champion had become the maestro at driving. After days of teaching and nervously guiding the teen to “look left, look right, look over your shoulder, check your blind spot, stop at the stop sign, put on your indicator, watch out for that car,” to her surprise, both her father and Adria would be fast asleep as Simone would drive her sister and dad back home from the gym after practices.

While the faith in Simone’s driving must have restored by now as the gymnastics GOAT flaunts her latest addition to the garage, a white G-Wagon, matching her new home, their bond remained similar otherwise. One of the things they did only clear the fact that they had the classic sisterly bond.

Adria Biles had the best words saved for the ‘big sis’

It is about the unscathed love they hold for each other which even translates to wearing one another’s clothes without nagging. In Chris Diamond’s YouTube podcast, Adria informed the host about it. She said, “She [Simone] has so many clothes, so it’s like you’re not even going to know if it’s mine. But I’ll either take it and be like, ‘Hey, I’m taking your stuff,’ or she’ll give it to me, like, fully hand it to me and say, ‘Here, I’m giving it to you with my full self.’ Then I’ll wear it, and she’ll be like, ‘That’s my shirt!’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, do we not remember a week ago when you handed it to me?'” For Adria, sharing dresses with her elder sister is a form of love language and she always enjoys it.

While clothes from Simone’s closet may go missing time and again, their love is not. A year ago, Adria posted a photo of the two together as kids where Simone looked into the camera with her bright smile and the younger Biles looked at her sister with what seems to be a piece of chip in her hand. The two wore similar DIY-esque necklaces as they sat on a wooden chair for the photo. She captioned the Instagram post, “the little girl in me would look for you in every single room she walks into. you have made me into the person i am today and i will forever look up to you. i love you sister 🤍”

Not just clothes and photos, Adria even shares emotions with her sister. One moment that comes to mind is the 2016 Rio Olympics when Adria was nervous for her sister’s performance on the big stage. Talk about a sister’s bond, eh? Right after the Gymnastics GOAT won the all-around in Brazil, Adria couldn’t keep her calm as she burst into tears of joy while excitedly jumping up and down.

Indeed, the sibling love is something to always look forward to, but something like this is rare and very special. In 2012, Adria was concerned as any 13-year-old would be. However, no one can deny that their bond is timeless.
