How fast is too fast for a comeback? In the world of sports, injuries can sideline even the greatest athletes for months, sometimes years. But every now and then, a competitor defies expectations, returning to peak form in record time. When the University of Oklahoma’s top collegiate gymnast stepped back onto the vault just days after surgery, even his coach was left speechless. Was this an act of sheer determination, or something beyond extraordinary?
We are talking about Oklahoma’s Fuzzy Benas. Fuzzy Benas has once again shown why he is one of the most resilient gymnasts in the sport. The head coach of the University of Oklahoma men’s gymnastics, Mark Williams, couldn’t hide his amazement. He took to Instagram on Sunday to share his thoughts, saying, “Released on Monday, started vaulting on Tuesday, and competed like this on Saturday 🤯.”
The statement perfectly captured the incredible determination and quick recovery of Benas after his thumb surgery in January. Many expected him to take time before competing at his best, but he proved everyone wrong with a breathtaking vault performance.

The injury initially occurred in November, before the 2024 Swiss Cup. Later, an MRI revealed a full muscle tear. Finally, on January 3rd, he underwent surgery to repair the ligament of his thumb. “We’re still waiting on him,” said the head coach on 31st January. But on Saturday, the Sooners competed against Michigan, and Simpson and the NACC 2024 All-Arounder performed exceptionally well after undergoing thumb surgery and being released on just Monday.

Despite the odds, Benas executed his routine flawlessly. His precision, control, and power were on full display as he soared through the air with a flip and twist and then landed with perfection. The crowd erupted in applause, and judges awarded him the top spot in the vaulting event with a 14.350. On just the 5th day after his comeback, he was the highest scorer in the apparatus across teams. His performance wasn’t just about the score! Rather, it was a testament to his perseverance and refusal to back down from challenges.
Journey of comeback king, from injuries to triumph
This was not the first time when the University of Oklahoma’s star gymnast faced adversity and fought his way back. During a routine floor training session in 2023, he tore his Achilles tendon. It wasn’t a standard rupture, as he tore the tendon from his calf muscle, a rare and serious injury.“The Achilles thing definitely scared me the most because my dad had an Achilles tear when he was a gymnast. I was also scared because I was told I was only the third gymnast ever to have this full soleus tear,” the gymnast said about his injury. The news was heartbreaking for both Benas and his fans. With no surgical solution available, he had to rely on an extensive rehabilitation program under top medical specialists. He couldn’t walk until May 2023 and wasn’t allowed to jog until July that year.

In an interview with InsideGym in February 2024, he said, “I’d be lying if I said this being the end of my career never crossed my mind. But I really felt like I owed it to my team, and myself, to at least try and come back,” when he was asked about ‘how he dealt with the aspect of injuries?’ His patience and dedication finally paid off when he returned to competition later in 2024. He represented the USA at the Winter Cup in February 2024 and competed at the DTB Pokal in Stuttgart in 2024. His performance at the 2024 NCAA tournament further solidified his comeback, earning him a bronze medal in the All-Around category. Later, he joined forces with Leanne Wong to represent the country at the Swiss Cup in November 2024, proving that he was back where he belonged among the best.
