The Utah State Aggies gymnastics team is gearing up for a critical showdown at the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Gymnastics Championships on March 22 at the Provident Credit Union Event Center in San Jose. With a 6-10 overall record—3-1 at home but just 3-9 on the road—the Aggies face an uphill battle in the Quad meet, especially against defending champion Boise State, which has already claimed the 2025 MW regular season title. But wait, the episodes of bad news are not over yet.

To make matters worse, Utah State will be without its top vaulter, Nyla Morabito. With a 48.895 NQS, she has been a vital force for the Aggies this season. But she will miss not only this match but the rest of the season. A crushing blow for the gymnastics program that has already been finding the road slippery. However, despite the setback and the important match scheduled in two days, the fans have lined up to wish the teenage gymnast a speedy recovery.

The gymnastics star explains her fateful situation

Just days before the 2025 Mountain West Gymnastics Championships, Utah State’s star gymnast Nyla Morabito took to Instagram with heartbreaking news. In a candid post on March 18, the Canadian sensation revealed that she had ruptured her Achilles during floor warm-ups the previous weekend—an injury that instantly derailed her season and shattered her hopes of ending her sophomore year on a high. “This is definitely not how I envisioned my sophomore season-ending,” Morabito wrote. “But I truly believe everything happens for a reason.” What reason was she talking about, though?

For Aggies fans, the reason feels impossible to accept. Morabito’s absence leaves a massive void, and the timing couldn’t be crueler. Just a week earlier, on March 10, she was named the Mountain West Floor Specialist of the Week for her stellar performance against the Air Force.

In a cruel twist of fate, the Aggies will face Air Force again at the MW Championships—but this time, without their floor maestro. So, the significance of her absence is staggering. Moreover, the Welland, Ontario native had already claimed four Specialist of the Week titles this season, making her one of the Aggies’ most decorated gymnasts. Her brilliance on the mat, particularly on the floor, might become the saving grace for Utah State’s side in the match. But that option is now gone. So what help can she give in the upcoming match? Hold your breath.

“Now, I’m ready to embrace a new role and continue supporting them for the rest of the season from a different perspective,”  Nyla wrote in her post. So ultimately that signifies her light found in the dark. But will such a cheerleading role from the sidelines bring any change? The sophomore thinks yes.

What’s your perspective on:

Can the Aggies overcome the odds without Nyla Morabito, or is their season already doomed?

As per her, the Utah Aggies Gymnastics program has always been supportive of her. So, she can take such a role for the betterment of the result. In the end, she wrote, “I’m trusting in God’s plan and what he has in store for me, I know there’s more ahead. I’ll be back soon.” Her fans also want that. They have dropped their posts in the comment box.

The star’s absence from the mat saddens the fans

When Nyla Morabito shared the devastating news of her Achilles rupture on Instagram, it wasn’t just a post—it was a wave of emotion. Within moments, the comment section became a flood of love, support, and heartbreak, with fans and fellow gymnasts rallying around the Utah State star.

“UGH Nyla!! I’m so so sorry!! I’m praying for a clean recovery. I love you!!” one fan wrote, perfectly capturing the shared grief of Aggie Nation. Another chimed in with, “so sorry ny, proud of you 🤍”—a brief but powerful tribute to Morabito’s impact on the mat. In the meantime, the messages kept pouring in, with one follower adding, “Sorry to hear! Good luck with recovery Nyla!” Each comment reflected the bittersweet mix of admiration and sorrow for the gymnast whose season ended far too soon. But it wasn’t just fans offering words of encouragement—fellow athletes made sure Morabito knew she wasn’t alone.

However, it’s no surprise that Morabito has garnered such a loyal following. She isn’t just any gymnast—she’s a record-breaker. In 2024, she etched her name in Utah State history, achieving the 18th-highest single-season vault average (9.790) of all time. This month, she added another accolade to her name, being crowned the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week—a fitting title for someone who has been the heart of the Aggies’ program. Now, as Morabito begins the long road to recovery, the outpouring of love is sure to fuel her comeback. And if her unstoppable spirit on the mat is any indication, she’ll be back—stronger than ever.
