The world of sports is a cruel one. One moment you are all set for glory, the next moment you have been sidelined with an injury. And in the case of gymnasts, these injuries are especially heartbreaking due to their long recovery times. But for British gymnast Jennifer Gadirova, things have been especially bad throughout her. She had suffered significant setbacks due to injuries but February 2025 brings yet another dark chapter in his life. Something not even her bronze medal can protect her from.
Gadirova etched her name in history when she got a bronze in the team at the Tokyo Olympics. Apart from the Olympic medal, Gadirova also won the silver medals in the 2022 World Championships and the 2022 European Championships. Unfortunately, time and again, her comeback to the mat has been pegged back by injuries. Aiming to continue with her Tokyo heroics in Paris, Gadirova had an ankle operation that broke her Paris aspirations.
Now, recovering from the setback, Jennifer was training for the gymnastics World Cup scheduled to take place in Osijek, Croatia. But much to her dismay, Gadirova yet again injured herself. This time, it was a more serious injury as she was dealing with her ACL. In a recent Instagram post, the Olympian detailed what exactly went down.

She said, “Recently, whilst at Lilleshall for a National Squad Camp in preparation for the upcoming line of competitions, I suffered an injury to my knee. Performing a basic skill, I landed well, only to then feel a pain which has been diagnosed as an ACL injury.” Penning down a long message, Gadirova seemed shocked and crestfallen to have suffered the sudden injury. She pointed out that en route to her recovery, she has been concentrating on her stability and her landing to be strong.

And while it looked like Gadirova was having her strength back, the injury came quite out of the blue. In fact, the Olympian also pointed out that her physical health was on point and she felt the fittest since 2022. However, despite the injury delaying her coming back to competitive gymnastics significantly, Gadirova is not backing out of her LA 2028 aspirations.
Reflecting on her plans for the next Olympics slated to take place in the US, Gadirova wrote, “This does not change my LA 2028 plans… It’s the start of the cycle, and it’s not just about how you start, but how you continue to grow and finish it.” Meanwhile, such saddening news has attracted some significant attention from the online gymnastics community. Citing the example of Rebecca Andrade, they quickly came to her support.
Jennifer Gadirova gets fans’ backing amidst unfortunate injury
The fans swarmed to the comments section to chime in with their point of view. One fan’s words reflected disappointment and sympathy for Jennifer Gadirova. More so because she was nearing a competitive comeback before suffering an ACL injury. Given her progress and selection for the Croatia World Cup, her setback was unexpected.
Their words read, “😭 was hoping to see her back in competition as she was on her way to recovery. Hope she rests up well as she already said her time is coming and having her twin sister, who has just been through this journey herself, to lean on for support with be a huge helping hand.”. The gymnast must be having some semblance of support by the overwhelming well wishes that she is being given
Another fan, too is left frustrated and expressed the eagerness with which they await her return. Gadirova was on track for a major comeback after setbacks since 2022. She had regained peak fitness and secured selection for the Croatia World Cup, signaling a return to international competition. However, her ACL injury at a national squad camp abruptly halted that momentum.
Expressing disappointment on the same, the netizen added, “So disappointed for her, this year could have been a great year for her to make a comeback! Hope she recovers swiftly and strongly! Despite the devastating setback, her fans and well-wishers are aware of her resilience and past struggles.
While several fans expressed disappointment not just for the injury itself but for the lost opportunity to see her compete at her best this year, many remain hopeful and are counting on her comeback. “Her strength to keep going is incredible. I can’t imagine facing these many major setbacks and still loving the sport,” wrote one such optimistic fan.
One netizen who also happens to be a supporter of Team Great Britain was particularly frustrated with the sport’s unpredictability. Making his disdain and disappointment clear, he writes, “I hate being a Team GB fan sometimes.” But this is not an isolated case. Other notable gymnasts from the British team have also been put on the shelf due to injuries. This includes 2022 Commonwealth Gold medalist Ondine Achampong, who is out due to an Achilles injury, and Brinn Bevan, who lost his chance at the Rio due to an injured Tibia and Fibula.
Moreover, after overcoming past setbacks, Jennifer was finally on track for a full international return, even securing a spot at the Croatia World Cup. Her injury, especially after taking extensive precautions, feels like a cruel twist of fate. Fans, hopeful for her resurgence, now face another painful wait.

Brazilian gymnastics sensation and Olympic medalist Rebeca Andrade, who even defeated the goat Simone Biles in the Paris Olympics and grabbed her gold in floor exercises, had faced several setbacks because of back-to-back injuries. She tore her ACL three times. And that too between 2015 and 2019, while she was aiming to reach the peak. Andrade underwent reconstructive surgery each time, but she kept coming back and eventually won Olympic and World medals.
Reflecting on this awe-inspiring journey of Rebeca, one hopeful fan commented, “If Rebe can do it after 3 acls. Then so can she. Hope to see her again!” Thus, it is evident that the injury has pegged Jennifer Gadirova’s progress significantly. However, whether or not she can come out of the hole will be an interesting prospect to watch out for in the upcoming days.
