“Hey, if I’ve been touched here, does that mean I’ve been s**ually ass**lted?” That was 24-year-old Simone Biles, confused and unsure if she’d been violated. Fast forward to 27, and Simone is a woman who knows exactly where she stands. Fresh off her honeymoon in South Africa, Simone’s not holding back. Few things get to her. But there are things she won’t tolerate. Disrespecting her, talking trash about her husband, or commenting negatively on her hair? Forget about it. But the one thing that rubs her the wrong way? Anyone violating her personal space, especially in a crowd.
On March 7, Simone Biles took to Threads to make it very clear how much she dislikes being touched without her permission, writing, “The easiest way to irritate me is to touch or grab me when I’m in public.” For Biles, this isn’t just about an occasional inconvenience—it’s about respecting personal space and setting boundaries in a world where athletes, especially high-profile ones, often face constant physical contact and unwanted attention. This isn’t the first time Biles has had to address this issue.
During the Paris Olympics, a cameraman accidentally collided with her mid-competition. Biles, visibly frustrated, turned to the camera crew and sternly stated, “If one of these cameramen hit me one more time, we’re going to have an issue.” While she said it with a smile, the message was unmistakable: don’t cross the line. What Simone Biles is really trying to say here is that respect for an athlete’s personal space is just as important as respecting their achievements.

For too long, athletes suffered from physical contact and intrusion from the media because people kept using their fame as an excuse. Soft behaviors toward famous athletes routinely go unnoticed. Through her persistent position, Biles indicates that fame should not diminish her entitlement to space and respect just as it does for any other person.
The issue reaches beyond her because every athlete under public scrutiny faces violations of their personal space when the media pursues access to their lives. Through her stance, Biles creates a boundary that demonstrates that no athlete or anyone else should receive physical contact unless they consent to it. The athlete sets strict boundaries, which become invalid if people fail to respect them.
But she is not alone in her views. The audience behind her stands firm with Biles as they defend her position to the rest of the world. All her fans stand completely behind her while promoting her support to the world.
Fans speak out in support of Simone Biles’ boundaries
One fan added, “How did you survive South Africa because we are very touchy-feely. We are forever greeting strangers with a hug or arm pat.” This just shows how, in South Africa, people are super affectionate. Hugs and pats are pretty normal as a way of saying hello. But the fan still gets Simone’s point. While they might have been married back in 2023, Biles didn’t get much time with Owens.
So now, with all the championships and events behind her and her extensive schedule clear, she can finally have that. Now, even though the culture might be more touchy-feely there, Simone’s made it clear that she’s all about respecting her space. Another fan added,
“I know the feeling. I can’t stand being touched by strangers.” Another chimed in, “No one should be doing that to anyone, and you’re right to be annoyed.”

And one more said, “People are just… dumb for doing this.” With everything that’s happened in the sports world like the Larry Nassar case, it’s clear why Simone Biles is standing firm on her space. Nassar was a former doctor, and he abused his position of trust and violated the bodies and lives of countless athletes, including Simone herself.
For years, he took advantage of young athletes, and Simone was one of the brave women who spoke out. After a long fight, Nassar is now in j*il, but the scars he left are still very much felt by those he hurt. Another fan added, “Who the ** would do that?!” It’s not just Simone—Gabby Thomas recently shared being physically grabbed at the airport by a man who accused her of not earning her Harvard degree.

She posted, “Imagine just trying to go for a run and someone feels entitled to put their hands on you.” This is a bigger issue than just a few isolated incidents. While media attention and coverage are important, there’s a line that gets crossed when it turns into a constant invasion of personal space. For athletes like Simone Biles and Gabby, it’s not just an annoyance—it’s a violation of their privacy and humanity.
No one should feel entitled to touch, harass, or invade anyone’s space just because they’re in the public eye.
