Who is Laurent Meuwly: All to know about Lieke Klaver’s coach

Laurent Meuwly is not a new name on the Dutch Track. He initially spent years of his career, as the head coach in Switzerland. There, Meuwly gifted the nation 11 national records in 4×100 m races. Later, he joined the sprint/hurdles and relays for the Netherlands, again as a head coach, and continued his legacy.

In 2023, Laurent Meuwly received the honor of the Coaching Achievement Award. What makes his style unique is that Meuwly is known to segregate his players with a Flyer or a Diesel tag. It helps him understand athletes’ strengths or rather weaknesses and work accordingly. He has previously reported to Simplifaster, that Lieke Klaver is a speed-based athlete whereas Femke Bol is more endurance-based. This distinction helps Meauwly come up with ways to make use of their strengths and shorten their weaknesses. He has stated, “It’s not possible to perform at a very high level if you have your strengths, but everything else is very weak, so a goal is also to limit the weaknesses.”

Meuwly has given the Netherlands several international honors. Apart from Klaver, he has also trained Ajla Del Ponte, Nadine Visser, Liemarvin Bonevacia, Anna Kielbasinska, Viktoriia Tkachuk as well as the 400m indoor world record holder, Femke Bol.

Laurent Meuwly and Lieke Klaver have been an unstoppable duo since they began working together in August 2019. In these five years, Klaver’s achievements have soared. There were numerous instances when Klaver was torn between the 200m and 400m events, but Meuwly, with his keen insight, knew where her true potential lay. In 2021, European Athletics reported that Meuwly had confidently declared Klaver’s future was in the 400m. Now, three years later, as she brings home the gold, his prediction stands as a testament to his expertise and vision.

Since joining Meuwly’s training group, Klaver has amassed an impressive haul of 9 gold medals, 5 silvers, and 2 bronzes across various international sprints and relays. Her medal collection includes titles from the World Championships, World Indoor Championships, World Athletics Relays, European Championships, European Indoor Championships, European Games, and of course, the Olympics.

But medals alone don’t tell the full story. Klaver’s current world ranking of No. 3 in the 400m this year speaks volumes about Meuwly’s exceptional coaching. Under his guidance, Klaver has achieved personal bests of 49.58 seconds in the 400m (2024), 22.46 seconds in the 200m (2023), and 11.33 seconds in the 100m (2023).

This strategy, focusing on explosive speed and sustained endurance, has transformed Klaver into one of the most formidable athletes on the track.
