Fernando Alonso sees no value in finishing best of the rest in the 2018 Formula 1 drivers’ standings.

The McLaren driver has scored 50 points and currently occupies 10th in the drivers’ championship but just three points separate him from seventh-placed man Sergio Perez with four races remaining.

When asked about the possibility of finishing his F1 career, after having claimed the so-called ‘class B championship’, Alonso replied: “Unbelievable, isn’t it? It’s like in 2012!

“It means nothing to finish seventh in the championship. There is no point to have any plan for that,” he added.

Alonso stressed his focus solely lies with trying to consolidate McLaren’s position in the constructors’ championship.

The Spaniard has managed just one points finish in the last five races in Singapore and is concerned by the recent progress of midfield rivals Force India and Sauber.

“My only plan is to finish in the constructors’ championship as high as possible with McLaren. We have now a strong position,” he explained.

“We have maybe no hope to catch Renault and Haas, but the gap between us and Force India and Sauber is reducing every race, because they are very strong now.

“We will not let them catch us before Abu Dhabi, so that’s my main focus. The drivers’ championship, really not too interested.”

For now, Alonso and McLaren are stuck in that battle for the best of the rest title. This is because, the gulf between the top 3 teams and the rest of the pack is so large. However, next year will be interesting with the team fielding a brand new line-up.
