Over the last month, Nintendo users have frequently reported that they are receiving messages warning them of unapproved account access from obscure locations around the globe. Some users have lost money as a result of unauthorized interference.
Nintendo accounts are vital for today’s Switch gamers. It allows players to access online services for the Switch, execute eShop acquisitions for new games, or link to payment methods like PayPal.
Nintendo Accounts Hacked

The initial account hijacking reports surfaced mid-March and peaked over the previous weekend. A massive amount of users began receiving email alerts claiming remote IP addresses are accessing their Nintendo profiles. The procedure used to hack these profiles are unknown.
As reported by Eurogamer, there seems to be a miscellaneous pattern of people using unique passwords. Even complex passwords generated through a password manager and those who had used the same password as elsewhere. It is an indication that hackers are getting fancy and going beyond traditional credential filling.
It all started when Switch users took the issue on Twitter—complaining that their Nintendo accounts being vulnerable for hacking and accessing by third-parties not once but multiple times. One such user is LootPots’ founding editor Pixelpar. He announced that his Nintendo account “accessed copious times late at night,” even though his password was “a unique” twist and that his PC was not at all jeopardized.
Social media posts from Switch users suggest their accounts being accessed from countries like the US, Chile, and Russia.

For example, one Twitter user alleged that someone hacked their PayPal account and misused $200 on Nintendo games. A different user added that someone mangled their Nintendo account and purchased 150 dollars of Fortnite money.

Switch Players Advised To Secure Accounts

Players who have not yet enhanced to 2FA security on their Nintendo accounts are immediately advised to do so. To help protect account information and prevent issues with fraud. Those with linked payment accounts should also check them for any dubious activity. The advice from the team says that they should report any theft immediately to help.
Nintendo is well aware of these facts, and are imploring their customers to opt-in for the two-step verification for better support. Follow the steps from the support page, which will guide you through setting up 2FA for your account.
