In a landscape filled with lavish lives and star-studded personalities, Dwayne Johnson also known as ‘The Rock’, one of wrestling’s finest and a cinematic titan, finds inspiration in an unexpected place: a determined NFL player’s journey from Australian shores to the glittering American football arenas.
While today Johnson sits on an empire worth around $800 million, he too knows the grind, remembering a time when he had just seven dollars to his name after being released from a football stint. But let’s dive deeper into this unique intersection of lives. Lou Hedley’s path from tattoo artist in Bali to being the New Saints’ latest signing is the stuff of legends.

Australian Lou Hedley has been through more twists and turns than the maximum. Once the owner of a tattoo shop in Bali, the 30- to 12-month-old undrafted rookie later adopted the hard function of a scaffolder rather than, in the end, playing as a punter for City College of San Francisco. Despite being an excessive college dropout, he secured the grades to strengthen his studies.

Interestingly, he then transferred to the University of Miami, where Johnson had been a protector since the early ’90s. Hedley played a surprising 47 games for the Hurricanes, securing an outstanding total of 455.2 yards according to punt. The 2023 draft noticed his neglect; however, the New Orleans Saints diagnosed his simple expertise, signing him as an undrafted free agent. Johnson, moved by Hedley’s adventure, shared the story on Twitter, stating, “Rooting for this guy to make it. Love Lou Hedley’s story and his hunger.”

Before gracing the American football field, Hedley was an Australian rules football enthusiast. Beginning as a junior player for Mandurah Mustangs, he later played with the South Mandurah Falcons in the Metro Football League for five memorable seasons. His skills were further showcased during the 2013 West Australian Football League season with the Peel Thunder.
ProKick Australia, noticing his exemplary kicking skills, offered Hedley a spot in their program dedicated to training Australians for American football. On a side note, his teammate Blake Grupe, another undrafted talent, dethroned Will Lutz for the Saints’ placekicker role, proving the Saints have an eye for spotting raw, untamed talent.
