Life-changing moments are not uncommon in the gridiron. A single pass or a tackle can make or break lives. Justin Herbert, the QB for the Los Angeles Chargers, for instance, saved a career with a “missed pass”. He became the savior of Simon Biles, the renowned Olympic champion’s husband, Jonathan Owens.
Owens, the former safety for the Houston Texans was recently acquired by the Green Bay Packers. After spending four seasons with the Texans he started all 17 games last season. Owens entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent signing from Missouri Western St. The 27-year-old is earning his stripes in NFL and is grateful for the life-changing moment sparked by Herbert and the Texans.

After signing to the Texan’s Practise squad in 2019, Owens did not see much playing time. Prior to week 15, owing to Justin Reid, their safety suffering from a concussion, he went onto the field facing against Jacksonville Jaguars. Owens further earned another opportunity in the following week with the starting safety Eric Murray landing on the Covid-19 list, which saw him secure his first career interception on Justin Herbert.
“I got an interception, my second start….on Justin Herbert and that was really what changed the course of my life”, Owens recalls his life-altering moment.

New Chapter with the Packers
Owens is all grateful for the opportunities he got during his stint at Texans and looking forward to his journey in the new franchise. Owens began his professional football journey when he was signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2018 NFL draft. However, during the last week of organized team activities (OTAs) leading up to the 2018 season, Owens was waived due to an injury and spent the entire season on injured reserve.
Owens demonstrated his exceptional tackling as he started in all 17 games for the Houston Texans during the previous season. His impressive performance was highlighted by 125 tackles. Despite his contributions, the Texans allowed him to enter free agency, and he remained unsigned until May.
