Defending champions Kansas City Chiefs always knew that it wasn’t going to be easy going up against Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They started Super Bowl LV on a positive note as QB Patrick Mahomes made some positive forward drives. However, after a quiet first quarter, Brady and former New England Patriots teammate Rob Gronkowski connected for the first touchdown of the game.

But what followed later must’ve driven Chiefs HC Andy Reid and DC Steve Spagnuolo mad. The Chiefs defense was thoroughly outplayed, both physically and mentally by a focused and determined Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense led by the magnificent Tom Brady.

They were handed a record-breaking 95 yards in penalties in the first half as they slumped to a 9-21 deficit heading into halftime. Fans took to social media to express their displeasure. Former Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens tight end Shannon Sharpe also joined in.

Sharpe had previously pointed out how Spagnuolo’s defense was raking in too many penalties en route to Super Bowl LV. He was proven right tonight as the Chiefs racked up a mammoth 95 yards in penalties in the first half itself.

The defending champions were without two key players in the form of Eric Fischer and Willie Gay for Super Bowl LV. But regardless, the likes of Chris Jones, Frank Clark, and others had to do better.

A special mention goes out to Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu aka ‘Honey Badger’. He had two penalties in the first half. In addition to that, he got into an unnecessary war of words with Bucs QB Tom Brady. Mathieu had a poor game and must own up to his mistakes. The Chiefs need to work on this aspect of their game.
