Winning a Super Bowl is no small task. Winning it in on the trot? Much harder. Only 7 franchises have been able to win back-to-back Super Bowls in the league’s long and illustrious history.

And the last franchise to achieve this feat was the New England Patriots. The Patriots empire, established by Head Coach Bill Belichick, sets the benchmark for being a dynastic NFL franchise.

Over 2 decades at the helm, under Belichick, the Patriots went from 0 Super Bowl titles to a record-equaling 6 in 2019. 2 players who were part of the franchise when it accomplished the feat of back-to-back Super Bowls were Willie McGinest and Scott Pioli.

With the Kansas City Chiefs looking to replicate the same success story, the former NFL players discussed just how difficult it is to pull it off.

The work that goes into winning consecutive Super Bowl titles

The two former Patriots players, during a discussion, talked about the uncertainties and preparations required to pull off the feat.

“You have to remember that we didn’t make the playoffs in 2002, the season after we won Super Bowl XXXVI. So after the ’03 Super Bowl, we understood how hard it was to get back to it.

“And that nothing we had just accomplished would translate over to the next year,” said McGinest. “Almost immediately after the Super Bowl ends, you have to fully immerse yourself into player acquisitions and end-of-the-season evaluations,” Pioli added.

“In order to repeat, teams have to have a lot of talent and really good coaching. There are plenty of instances where a team gets really hot at the right time.

“But when you win multiple titles within a small window, it’s a reflection of the system and process in place. That’s what Kansas City has,” he said.
