Brock Purdy’s stunning regular-season loss to the P.J. Walker-led Browns has sent pin-drop silence through the NFL. The former “Mr. Irrelevant,” now the 49ers‘ QB, has seen his once-promising journey hit rock bottom, prompting claims of a “fraud” narrative. But are these claims founded in truth?
In a season that had seen Purdy riding high with a five-game winning streak, things took a nosedive in Week 6. The game against the Browns was far from the Purdy viewers had come to know. The second-year player, who had made the game look easy, suddenly found himself grappling with serious issues on the turf. Now the question on everyone’s mind is, can Brock Purdy bounce back from this setback?

According to Associated Press Sports Writer, Josh Dubow, Purdy’s performance in Week 6 was dismal. He completed just 44.4% of his passes, a performance that marked the lowest completion percentage (20+ attempts) for a Kyle Shanahan-coached QB since Brian Hoyer’s 2014 struggle (Browns vs Colts 12/7/2014).
Indeed! Cleveland’s defense deserves credit for holding San Francisco to a mere 17 points and 215 yards, a far cry from the Niners’ usual output of 33.4 points and 402.6 yards per game entering Week 6. And, Week 6 against the Browns was a tough one for Purdy.
Brock Purdy completed 44.4% of passes on Sunday for #49ers. That was lowest completion percentage (20+ attempts) for a Kyle Shanahan QB (as OC or head coach) since Brian Hoyer went 13 for 30 (43.3%) for Browns vs Colts 12/7/2014

220 lbs QB struggled, with just 12 completions on 27 attempts, 125 yards, a 44.4% completion rate, and there’s more. QB also struggled with only 1 TD, 1 INT, a 33-yard-long pass, 3 sacks, a 55.3 passer rating, and a QBR of 40.1. Of course, the game was further complicated by the losses of Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel to injury.
On the claims that Purdy had been exposed, the quarterback himself acknowledged, “We all got to look ourselves in the mirror and see the flaws and stuff and get better from it. But it starts with me.”
Also note: Purdy’s 2023 season, prior to this game, boasted impressive stats: 1,396 yards, 10 TDs, just 1 INT, and a solid QBR of 76.9, marking an undeniably strong start to the season. However, critics wasted no time labeling him as exposed and ending any MVP talk.

Greg Cosell, an NFL analyst and senior producer at NFL Films, weighed in, saying, “I’m not making excuses here. He missed throws [vs Browns].” Despite the poor showing, Cosell doesn’t believe the Browns have figured out Purdy, adding, “But I would also say that there were some times that he made some really good throws as well.”
Some analysts have dismissed the “fraud” narrative, arguing that Purdy remains a talented quarterback. NFL.com columnist Adam Schein noted, “No, Purdy didn’t play well, completing just 44.4 percent of his passes for 125 yards and one TD against one pick.” He added, “Not to mention, the weather conditions certainly weren’t at their finest in Cleveland, with Purdy clearly struggling to grip a wet ball at times.” Schein also praised the Browns’ defense, calling it “absolutely sensational” and crediting Browns coordinator Jim Schwartz’s brilliant coaching.

Hence, one thing is clear – Debates on Purdy’s true potential will continue unless his squad faces a formidable test in an upcoming Monday Night Football showdown against the Vikings.
