The talented QB Justin Fields entered the NFL in the 2021 draft. He was selected 11th by the Chicago Bears and is known for his strong arm and mobility, which quickly progressed him to be the team’s quarterback in his rookie season. Fields had shown promise and contributed significantly to the Bears’ offense. For his exceptional performance, he earned accolades like Sugar Bowl MVP, first-team All-Big Ten, Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year, etc.

However, a certain American Veteran Broadcaster isn’t enamored with Justin Fields. Nor his capabilities to lead the Chicago Bears after two NFL seasons. After all, it seems like FS1’s Cowherd has a monthly quota for the Bears. And his recent ‘hot take’ on their star QB has fans all fired up.

A 5-20 QB with great highlights

Justin Fields, the Chicago Bears quarterback, faces immense pressure in this season due to significant roster changes. The team relies on him to fully showcase his potential. While showing promise as a runner last season, Fields still has room for improvement in his passing game. It is evidenced by his completion percentage of 60.4%.

Unfortunately, Colin Cowherd once again criticizes Fields and seems to be closely aligned with Michael Lombardi in this matter. Colin believes that fans wrongly attribute the struggles of the Bears’ offense to other factors instead of acknowledging Fields’ accountability in the matter.

MLB Football shared a glimpse of his views at the recent ‘The Herd Show,’ “Right now Justin Fields is a bust. He’s 5-20. He’s a YouTube quarterback. His highlights are great.” Cowherd believes the Bears have given Justin everything he needs to succeed as a quarterback. However, his underperformance has created a lot of pressure as a result. Last week, even the show host went so far as to suggest that Fields might lack self-awareness, as he included himself on the top 5 QB list and appears to have an ego rather than confidence.

“So, two years in with Justin Fields, he’s completing 59% of his throws, almost as many picks as touchdowns, and a bad passer rating. He’s a bad quarterback. I’ve watched guys with worse o-lines play at a higher level,” shared the veteran sports media personality after making this rebuttal on Field’s inclusion to the list. It did make fans wonder if Colin Cowherd made a valid point when he says that Fields is not among the top five.

Rookie to Sophomore: Has Fields Improved?

During a discussion, Cowherd compared Fields with other first-round quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert. Both Burrow and Herbert achieved early success despite facing weak team support, particularly due to poor offensive lines. Even though, Fields had a better offensive line, his improvements cannot be solely judged on it. While Cowherd’s point holds some truth, it lacks context. After all, the 2022 season can be considered a part of his rookie year as he only got to start 10 games in 2021 with an abandoned ‘offensive team plan’ by Matt Nagy.

Though, this upcoming season will mark a significant milestone for Fields. He enters his second consecutive year playing in the same offense as a professional football player. Notably, Fields has also showcased impressive growth from his rookie to sophomore year. He has increased his passing yards from 1,870 to 2,242 and touchdowns from 7 to 17. Furthermore, he etched his name in NFL history by becoming the third quarterback ever to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. He, therefore, accumulated eight touchdowns from an exceptional 1,143 yards in 2022.
