The 2020 NCAA college football season was a peculiar one, considering that players were given the choice of opting out due to the dangerous coronavirus outbreak in America. Several top prospects such as Micah Parsons and Penei Sewell opted to sit out the season in order to protect their families and prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft instead.
One of the major players who opted out last year was highly-rated North Dakota State University quarterback, Trey Lance. Lance gained a ton of new fans in 2019 when he helped NDSU to the FCS Championship. He concluded the season throwing for 287 times with 28 passing touchdowns and no interceptions.

In doing so, he set a new NCAA record for most passing attempts in a season without an interception. Lance further ran for 1,100 yards with 14 rushing TDs. His performances that year earned him the Walter Payton and the Jerry Rice Award as the FCS’s best freshman.

After being drafted as the surprise 3rd overall pick at the 2021 NFL Draft earlier this year, Trey Lance was given the chance to make his preseason debut last week. Lance just completed 5 of his 14 attempted passes on Saturday as the San Francisco 49ers lost to Super Bowl LIV winners, Kansas City Chiefs.
Despite an average completion rate, Lance displayed enough positives to back the suggestion that he is indeed competing with Jimmy Garoppolo for a starting spot ahead of the 2021 NFL season.
In fact, Chiefs HC Andy Reid also had a few words of praise reserved for the former NDSU quarterback.

“You’re in good hands…He’s a good player. He looked poised and composed — and he had a nice play on that firecracker there,” Reid said in the post-game press meet as per Mercury News.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is holding his cards close to his chest with no clear suggestion as to who will be QB #1 when the season starts in September. Jimmy G barely featured on the weekend. But we still expect him to start when the Niners take on Detroit Lions in Michigan.
