Just like his best friend Bill Belichick, Coach Nick Saban, too, has a perpetually stern expression. The Alabama HC also shares the common theme of winning championships, with both of them being historically great coaches. But as famous as he is for his stone-cold attitude, Coach Saban was recently exposed, showing off a previously unseen side of his.
Appearing on the Rich Eisen Show, 3x Pro Bowler Marlon Humphrey spoke about a recent viral video of Nick Saban’s lesser-known side. Humphrey, of course, played under Saban for 2 years in 2015 and 2016, during his time with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Knowing the ins and outs of Saban’s personality, Humphrey revealed details about the 71-year-old.

In a heartwarming video shared by Saban’s daughter, Kristen Saban Setas, on Father’s Day, the usually stoic coach can be seen engaging in some lighthearted VR boxing. The unexpected footage revealed a different side of Saban, one that his players rarely witness. His former player, Marlon Humphrey, discussed the viral video on the Rich Eisen Show.
“I can’t believe it. You don’t really get to see this side of Coach Saban too often, of him playing around with anything other than coaching. But he does love his kids, so I can see that probably, the grandkids and all that, so the grandkids got him I would imagine,” Humphrey said on the show.
Saban’s daughter shared the footage which dates back to Christmas, as can be seen with the background decorations, on the occasion of Father’s Day. The VR headset is supposedly a gift from the coach’s grandchildren, showing Saban’s love for his family, as Humphrey mentioned. But while Saban might have a softer side behind the scenes, the coach has remained stoic about his opinions on the radically shifting college football landscape.

Saban’s stance on NIL
While Saban’s endearing video provided a refreshing perspective on his personal life, his recent comments on the NIL debate are far from the ‘soft’ version of the coach. As college football embraces the changing landscape of name, image, and likeness rights, Saban believes in striking a delicate balance between what student-athletes receive and what they contribute.
The 16-year HC of Alabama stated his dislike for the ongoing conversation revolving around CFB’s NIL policy. In his opinion, the system continues to be geared towards favoring the athlete, while cutting out on the compromise towards a team that an athlete has to make. Saban stated that the new NIL rules will gear CFB into a ‘Pay-for-Play’ type of league, much like the NFL. As we gear up for the return of the CFB season, the NIL and Saban’s sentiments shall likely continue to dominate a greater part of the season, with a high number of students entering the transfer portal.
