Do you remember the date, September 1, 2016? Colin Kaepernick‘s famous kneeling gesture shocked the entire world, ultimately derailing his NFL career. Interestingly, a similar iconic pose was repeated on September 17, the day Patrick Mahomes celebrated his birthday and the day when his long-awaited dream gift of a new contract was finalized.

However, these are not the reasons for his recent kneeling. Just as the cornrows star had a personal motive for his anthem protest, the 2x MVP has his reasons as well. So, what transpired during the Sunday game?

During the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, September 17th, at Everbank Stadium, Patrick Mahomes recreated the iconic kneeling pose. This incident unfolded in the second half of the game. The 28-year-old quarterback, who is known for giving more than 100 percent in every game, was physically exhausted and in need of a break to recover.

In June 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Patrick Mahomes lent his voice to a video message aimed at the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell, expressing support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Mahomes openly shared the rationale behind his decisions during the offseason and addressed those who may have disagreed with him. The 7x Super Bowl champion told reporters that his primary focus was on effecting change, even if it stirred controversy. He stated, “I’m going do whatever I believe and what I believe is right and I’m going to do whatever I can to fight for equality for all people.

The Young Goat further elaborated, emphasizing, “I’m not worried about people and how they’re going to do negative stuff back to me. I’m worried about doing what’s right for humanity and making sure that all people feel equal. And I feel like that’s been the biggest thing, it’s not necessarily the gesture, but we’re trying to fix something, we’re trying to make it where it’s equal, everybody feels safe….Mahomes also touched upon the possibility of players of kneeling during the national anthem in 2020. While he didn’t confirm whether he and his teammates would do so, he cleared that those who choose this type of protest doesn’t mean that they are showing disrespect to the flag or to anyone who has served the country.
