The San Francisco 49ers wanted to get away from their quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. But after their lead quarterback, Trey Lance, suffered an ankle injury in the Sunday game against the Seattle Seahawks, it looked like Jimmy G will stay on the team. Not only will he stay, but will also lead the 49ers once again.

The team was not aware of Lance’s injury in the first quarter. Despite the absence of the lead shot-caller, the backup took up his place and helped the 49ers win its first game by a score of 27-7. This gave him the opportunity to earn some cool cash.
After the team discovered the ending injury of the 22-year-old QB, Jimmy Garoppolo walked in to save the day. He entered at the end of the first quarter. Garoppolo was a 13-of-21 stat line for 154 yards and a touchdown.
For his performance, he earned a bonus of $250,000 for his playing time. Another $100,000 for winning the game. The base salary of the QB is $6.5 million, fully guaranteed.
If Garoppolo remains healthy throughout the season, by just representing the 49ers this season, he will earn an extra $3.75 million. $250,000 for the next 15 regular-season games. Depending on how many games San Francisco wins the rest of the season with him at the helm, he may possibly get up to $1.5 million in 2022.

Jimmy G spent his off-season trying to recover from his shoulder injury. The surgery was delayed by six weeks. Because of this, his recovery timetable drove him to the training camp. His injured state affected the veteran’s trade prospects. Also, with so much uncertainty around him, it was hard to trade for a player as a starting quarterback.
The San Francisco 49ers could not find a trade partner. So, they began discussions between Jimmy G and Trey Lance. The team was sure they would hire Lance as their lead shot-caller. San Francisco worked out a deal. Now the only thing that remained was the contract. Garoppolo’s base pay was less than Lance’s.

With a guaranteed base pay of $6.5 million and $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses (with an additional $8.45 million in play-time incentives possible), Garoppolo’s new contract comes in significantly below that.
