NFL franchise Los Angeles Rams might find themselves cutting it a little too close in their attempts to re-sign defensive tackle Aaron Donald. The Rams recently confirmed the signing of former Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner and it might have tightened some things up for them. The Rams GM Les Snead has maintained that they are working towards finding win-win solutions.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, he will be signing a 5-year, $50 million deal in Los Angeles worth up to $65 million with incentives. But Wagner will be looking to join a team that boasts players like CB Jalen Ramsey, LB Leonard Floyd, and Donald.

The addition of the former Seahawks player only strengthens an already strong Rams defensive unit.

While recruiting Wagner won’t be to fill the void left by the departure of Von Miller, he adds an elite level of off-ball defensive prowess. The 2021 Pro Bowler is entering the 2022 campaign after recording career-high 170 tackles last season. But the team remains far from done in terms of retaining or re-signing some of their stars from last season.

How can the Los Angeles Rams re-sign Aaron Donald?

The league’s salary cap for the upcoming season is set at $208.2 million, and the Rams remain precariously close to tipping over the salary cap. To avoid that, the Rams GM will be looking to restructure the existing contract that Donald has with the franchise. It will mean more money for the player and a reduction of his cap hit on the team to ease fears of going overboard.

Donald still has 3 years remaining on his 6-year, $135 million deal with a base salary of $9.25 million due this year with a $26.75 million cap number.

Snead will be working out ways to reduce the cap number as Donald has the highest cap affecting the contract on the roster.

The Rams franchise cannot afford to lose a key piece in their defense in the form of Aaron Donald, and desperation might kick in soon. He was a major driving force during their Super Bowl LVI game against the Cincinnati Bengals as he made clutch plays towards the end of the game.
