Former San Francisco 49ers defensive QC coach DeMeco Ryans started his new journey with the Houston Texans this week. The newly appointed head coach has a mammoth responsibility lying ahead of him to resurrect the Texans who ended this season with the worst 3-13-1 record.

DeMeco got the support of the fans and the experts after the Texans’ announcement. After the stellar job Ryans did with the Niners’ defense this year, finishing on top of the defensive rankings, Houston is allowed to be excited. However, DeMeco and his team still have a huge quarterback problem.

DeMeco Ryans addressed the real problem he faces

Ryans has an added motive to bring winning days back to Houston. DeMeco is a former Texan himself and played seven seasons for the franchise after they drafted him in the second round of the 2006 draft. However, the former Defensive Rookie of the Year cannot just focus on his expertise. DeMeco needs a young quarterback who can take the Houston offense to the next level.

And David Mills is not the answer after the year he had. After 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in the dismal show this season, the Texans are likely to move on from the 24-year-old and make full use of their substantial cap space and 2nd pick in the upcoming 2023 draft.

We have to add more to that position. We know everybody gets excited about the quarterback. Yes, we want a great quarterback,” DeMeco said in his introductory press conference. He also added that besides the QB, he also needs the right ammunition to support their leader. The great running back, tight end, and receiver to complement the QB and the defense and special team to help the team function as a unit.

DeMeco will take the QB lesson from this last 49ers season

2x Pro Bowler Ryans also had Texans Chair and CEO Cal McNair and GM Nick Caserio in his first meet with the Texans media. However, DeMeco didn’t shy away from bringing up the 49ers. Especially how the quarterback situation unfolded in the Bay Area. The 49ers thought it was all over when Jimmy G had a season-ending injury after Trey Lance was already out. However, rookie Brock Purdy stepped up. Until he was injured in their NFC championship game.

And DeMeco knows that it’s just not the QB, but the entire offense as a whole that needs the nourishing. “As I’ve seen in San Francisco, what happens when you don’t have that one guy? Is the season over? Are you just booking it? No. How do you build around that great quarterback,” DeMeco explained his future plans.

The best options from the 2023 draft class remain to be Bryce Young And C.J. Stroud. The Chicago Bears, who have the first pick, already have Justin Fields. And DeMeco and Houston can have their pick. But they have to pick right.
