The New York Jets brought in a top QB draft prospect, Zach Wilson, as their second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Initially, beginning his career as a starter, his dismal performance in two seasons led to his transition into a long-term backup QB role. With Derek Carr being traded to the New Orleans Saints in March, there was a ray of hope for Wilson to still be considered a starter. But the Jets’ long-standing stalemate with the Green Bay Packers came to an end. The result? Aaron Rodgers is now with the New York Jets. And ever since his arrival, one has not heard a lot about Zach Wilson.

So what does the 2023 season look like for the top QB draft prospect from 2021? The Jets GM may have recently given a clue to these questions.

The Jets GM recently had an interview with Pro Football Talk about the team’s future planning for the new season. During the interview, when questioned about the young QB, he said that having Aaron Rodgers as a veteran mentor could be a useful strategy to develop Wilson for the future.

While Wilson has a disappointing 8-14 record as a starter, the GM still believes that Wilson can improve. The only thing he would have done differently is to bring in that veteran experience at an earlier stage for Wilson. He said, “If I had to do everything over again, I would probably have that veteran presence in the room early for Zach.”

While bringing in Aaron Rodgers means that the team will be putting their faith in him as a starter, it does not mean that Wilson cannot think of a long-term future with the franchise.

Wilson can have a great mentorship under Aaron Rodgers

The 4x MVP carries experience. And that experience can help in developing Zach Wilson for the future. Being with a first-ballot, Hall of Fame QB every day, Wilson can develop his abilities to establish himself as the top prospect he was recognized as back in 2021. It is now all about time. If Wilson gives himself time and learns the craft of the position under A-Rod, then maybe there is a chance that he will be considered as QB1 for the Jets. Look at Jordan Love, for example. After being in the shadows of Rodgers in the Packers for years, the franchise now puts their faith behind the development he’s made as a player to be their QB1.
