During the 2017 NFL draft, Patrick Mahomes was the first-round 10th overall pick by the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, years after Mahomes made the top 10 picks, another rising player has replicated the same feat. Tyree Wilson, another Red Raider playing for Texas Tech University, has made the top 10 picks this year during the 2023 NFL draft. A video going viral shows just how “explosive” this new NFL entrant is on the field.

Following in Patrick Mahomes’ footsteps, this rookie is ready to rumble

A clip posted by the official Twitter account of NFL Rookie Watch shows exactly what Wilson is going to bring to the table this coming season. Calling the power exhibited by the rookie defensive end “different”, the caption to the Tweet praised the new Las Vegas Raiders inductee to no end. The video revealed Tyree Wilson easily tackling another behemoth of a player, who was wearing a jersey numbered 75.

The caption read, “For reference, Josh Ball (No. 75) is listed at 6’8”, 304 pounds. And Wilson moved him like it was NOTHING.” His skills are the reason the Raiders are relying on him to transform their defense. The caption further read, “Wilson’s “explosiveness” has reportedly been on full display in the limited amount of reps he’s seen during camp. The Raiders rookie edge is looking SCARY, early into his comeback.” Just like Patrick Mahomes was drafted as No. 10 in the first round in 2017, Wilson has a similar story to tell.

During the 2023 NFL draft, he went to the Las Vegas Raiders as the No. 7 overall pick. He became the first Red Raider after Patrick Mahomes to be picked in the top 10. While Patrick Mahomes is an offense king, Tyree Wilson is all set to be a defense prince. After his draft to the Raiders, he was named the biggest X-Factor for the team in an ESPN article. With claims like this, there is no doubt that a lot is riding on Tyree Wilson’s shoulders as he steps into the 2023 season.

Will Tyree Wilson uphold the legacy?

When Patrick Mahomes reached his junior year, he forwent baseball to concentrate solely on football. From that moment, there was no stopping him. In 2016, a single game against Oklahoma witnessed him creating several NCAA and other records. His college football stardom translated flawlessly into the NFL. In his first season as a starting quarterback, Patrick Mahomes managed to become an MVP. Post that, he clinched one Super Bowl after the other. Patrick Mahomes also became the youngest quarterback to be named MVP twice.

Tyree Wilson himself has been making waves in college football. Standing at an impressive 6’6″, 271 lbs. and an 86-inch wingspan, his defensive prowess is what the Raiders are banking on to make or break them. This is not a surprise, considering the fact that according to the official Raiders website, a scout described him as a defender who “figures to turn into a full-blown nightmare for opponents”. After finishing his college football career with 121 tackles, 76 out of which are solo, it seems like Wilson might take the Patrick Mahomes’ legacy forward after all.
