Pittsburgh Panthers quarterback Kenny Pickett pulled off a mesmerising fake slide on his way to a 58-yard rushing touchdown against Wake Forest. His sneaky move was most certainly the moment of the game and a proof of why he is one of the most dominating contenders for the Heisman Trophy.

Pickett eluded a pass rusher in the backfield on the first drive of Saturday’s ACC Championship Game and dashed down the field for roughly a 20-yard gain. When Pickett reached the 40-yard line, defenders converged on him, but the redshirt faked a slide to escape from the secondary players off guard, allowing him to score unassisted from 58 yards.

When the reporters asked him about his unconventional yet effective first drive, “It was intentional,” Pickett said. “I just kind of started slowing down and pulling up and getting ready to slide and I just kind of saw their body language and they just pulled up as well. So I really don’t know. I have never done that before.”

However, with that phenomenal run, Pickett broke records in more than one way. It was a yard longer than his previous career-long rush and 28 yards more than his single-game season-high in rushing. However, along with that, the quarterback made history later that night. He threw his 80th career, passing touchdown surpassing Dan Marino’s previous high of 79 in program history.

“Kenny means everything to this program,” Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said. “He didn’t come back to win the Heisman, but he should. He came back to Pittsburgh to win a championship, and this is a dream come true. I couldn’t be happier for number eight.”

Impressed by Kenny’s performance, Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said, “Kenny Pickett is a winner — he’s a great competitor with physical skills. He appears to have all of those intangible qualities that make a quarterback great. And I certainly have great admiration for how he plays the game. I have a ton of respect for him. He earned this thing — the player of the year and now the championship.”

Pickett is hoping to lead Pitt to its first ever ACC title. He is presently ranked 15th in CBS Sports prospect rankings and second behind Ole Miss Matt Corral among quarterbacks. With Pickett at quarterback, the Panthers have now won ten games for the first time since 2009.
