The long-standing Cam Newton saga has finally come to an end this week. The former Carolina Panthers star signed a contract with New England Patriots. The three-time Pro Bowl member will compete with Jarett Stidham for the starting Quarterback position ahead of the NFL 2020 season. Cam Newton will look to fill in the gap left by the departure of Tom Brady to Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 31-year old also worked out with Patriots teammate Mohammed Sanu earlier this week. A recent video also surfaced which highlights Cam Newton’s eagerness to make his NFL return in the coming months.
Cam Newton can’t wait to return to the NFL with New England Patriots
Cam Newton looks visibly pumped in the above video. The 31-year old also refers to his foot and shoulder throughout the video. This could be a taunt to former employers Carolina Panthers who were accused of unfair treatment towards Newton owing to foot and shoulder injuries. The 2015 NFL MVP has been without a team since 2019 after his contract with the Panthers expired. Patriots’ Cam Newton acquisition was a major coup as per most NFL critics. He will give Jarett Stidham enough competition for a starting spot. Julian Edelman will also benefit by the presence of a skilled and experienced QB on the Patriots roster heading into the 2020 season.

Former Panthers coach Ron Rivera, who spent nine seasons with Newton, said the latter is headed in the right direction Rivera was quoted as saying “He’s headed in the right direction. I mean, he’s probably about as healthy as it gets from what I’ve seen on video. I think he’s ready to bust out.”

“Until we get that opportunity to know what we have, it would have been very hard to bring in a guy who’s had such a solid career, who was league MVP at one time (in 2015), and expect the young guy to get chances to grow. So I just felt that because of our circumstances, we could play this slow. And good for (Newton). He went to New England, which I think is going to be a great spot for him, and I think he’s going to have a lot of success.”

Cam Newton’s one-year contract extension with the Patriots includes various add on clauses. As per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the NFL 2011 Rookie of the Year will earn a base salary of $1.05 million. However, only $550,000 of that overall amount is guaranteed. The report further added that Cam Newton’s contract includes major bonuses and incentives that could amount to almost $7.5 million by the end of the season.
