Coach Nick Saban is known for running a tight ship. His tenure with Alabama has been well-documented as his 0.866 winning percentage showcases the kind of commitment and dedication he demands from his players. While Saban has tried and made sure that his players steer clear of trouble, one of his players did find himself in a deep legal uproar.

Video footage of the same has emerged online, and the events turned out to be fairly shocking.

College player tries to evade police

On March 15, Alabama’s Tony Mitchell, a four-star defensive back, was pulled over by the police. According to the police report, officers clocked a black Dodge Challenger for traveling at a speed of  78 miles per hour in a zone whose speed limit was 55. The car was being driven by Mitchell, who on realizing the situation sped up to 141 miles per hour in a futile attempt to evade the police. Eventually, the cops caught up to Mitchell and his co-passenger, and the following scenario was terrifying.

The officer asked Mitchell to place his car keys on the roof of the car, and the next question was, “Do you have a medical marijuana card?

While Mitchell looked a bit confused at first, he understood the situation he had found himself in and handed over the bag of weed to the officers. 226 grams of marijuana was recovered from Mitchell, along with more than $7,000 in cash, but the scariest of the lot was a loaded gun. Mitchell was accompanied by Christopher Lewis who was additionally charged with “carrying a concealed firearm without a permit”.

As soon as officers detained Mitchell and his co-passenger, the 19-year-old broke down and apologized to the officers. Mitchell’s greatest fear was however his father, at which the officers consoled the young man and offered words of compassion, “He might be mad at you, but you can call him.

Since the incident, both Mitchell and his co-passenger have been transported to the Holmes County Jail but what does the future look like for Mitchell, and where does Coach Saban stand on this?

Coach Saban preaches accountability

Tony Mitchell’s future looked bright, until recently, he was an integral part of the Alabama football team and was a consensus top 10 defensive player in the country. But one bad choice led to him being suspended from the team.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban also aired his disappointment with Mitchell, “Everybody’s got an opportunity to make choices and decisions, There’s no such thing in being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You’ve got to be responsible for who you’re with, who you’re around and what you do, who you associate yourself with, and the situations that you put yourself in“.

Coach Saban believes that Mitchell did put himself in this situation and his choices led to the repercussions. While Mitchell’s future seems uncertain, hopefully, the young phenom will find a way back to the big leagues and get past the mistake he’s made.
